I think that the original version of The Fly is the single greatest piece of horror film noir in existance, not to mention an incredibly sincere performance by the great Vincent Price. There were not any moments during the course of this film that I... felt bored or out of touch with the characters. This is grade A material for fans of classic horror. The film looked fantastic for its time. The laboratory in the basement of the house is filled with neat gadgets, and has an isolated look to it, which is perfect for its ill fated dweller. The sequel keeps this package from being 5 stars. Do not get me wrong, because I think that the sequel is extremely good, but I don't think that it lived up to the original. One thing that I liked very much about the sequel was that it was filmed in black and white, which I believe gives films of this time an extended sense of terror. John Sutton takes over the role of the detective and does an exceptional job. Something that appeals so much to me about the two original Fly movies is the emotion that prevails throughout both, coming from every single character, and the way that in the midst of all that the films are they still find rooms for a few jokes. I do have to comment on the fly make-up because they took a major step down on its look. The first films make-up made the character actually scary, while in Return of the Fly the head was much too large and it almost came off to me as intentional camp, but I looked over that and overall thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I got real excited when I first read that The Fly was going to be specially priced together with it's sequel, and I think that this is a must for any film buffs collection! Read more Less
