Pros: There are plenty of jokes throughout the movie for the whole family to enjoy.
Cons: There is perhaps one scene in the movie that is rather "adult", but kids may not get it. The bonus materials are slim. Also there is, of course the mandatory underlying romance subplot.
It is funny (funny ironic) that there has been a lot of talk recently about X-Men alums Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellan having their own X-Men spinoff movies in the next couple of years. It is funny in that Flushed Away sees the two superstars reunite again. And again, they play enemies, albeit in a different pair of roles. But seeing that they worked together again in this movie, this could help the chances of their future rumored solo endeavors in that it keeps their names in the spotlight.
But that aside, this movie is for the most part a fun and funny family movie. There are plenty of jokes throughout to keep any family laughing. And while Jackman, McKellan and the semi-damnsel in distress, Rita (voiced very well by the beautiful Kate Winslet) bring the laughs and excitement throughout the movie, the real stars of this movie are the slugs. They serenade the stars all through the movie and even provide a few jokes of their own (including one of the movie's many direct jabs at Disney). What's funny about the slugs is that most of the songs they sing are direct from the 80's. Perhaps the film's staff and actors have a fascination withthe 80's. Who knows. Either way, they are the true stars of this movie.
There are plenty of laughs through the whole movie, but there is one scene in particular that some parents may find unsuitable for their kids. When Rita and Roddy return to Roddy's home in Kensington, they fall down the house's chimney and end up in a rather compromising position. Kids may not get it but parents might. And that may upset some of them. There are also a couple of jokes that may upset some people (there is a joke about how the British see American tourists as being dumb and uninformed and one about the French and surrendering). But it should be noted that they are just jokes and mean no harm at all.
Other than that one scene, the only other downsides to Flushed Away are 1) the lack of bonus features and 2) the mandatory romance subplot. Dreamworks and co. were slim on the bonus materials here, save a bunch of promos for their other animated features. And let us not forget the mandatory underlying romance subplot here. This movie has proven even more that apparently it is next to impossible to get through a movie without the mandatory romance subplot. Thankfully that plot between Roddy and Rita was so slim that it didn't take too much from the fun of the movie.
This is a fun and funny family movie. Even though it won't be remembered as a standout piece in the overall picture of the movie industry years down the road, it is a movie that families at least will enjoy renting and watching every now and then. ...
