Pros: Amazing work by Paul Verhoeven. Quality presentation.

Cons: Would like to see interviews with the cast on this one.

Anyone who has a true intrigue for the Medieval Days would agree there are far too few films that depict the Dark Ages as they were. Most of them gloss history over with fantasy as in Excalibur and Ladyhawke. I'm not implying that these other m...ovies aren't also great works, but I am a fan of realism. I want an impression of what it was really like during the Dark Ages. Flesh & Blood gives us this flavor, in a strong way. There may have been countless witches and alchemists but the Dark Ages were not all about white unicorns and dazzling spell effects. It was about greed, power, deceit, sadism, disease, and superstition. Flesh & Blood unveils these elements in raw form in a story that is believable, moving, and interesting. This is what makes Flesh & Blood so great. I'm glad this is finally available on DVD. I've been waiting for it for a long time. Read more Less

    I really loved this movie!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 19, 2001

It's one of my favourites. I was very dissapointed to see it so severely criticised. "Flesh and Blood" is an adventure movie, it's not supposed to be psychological. I think it was so attacked because of Verhoeven's courage to always pick scandalous s...ubjects. I admire this. I don't find "Flesh and Blood" a second-rate film. On the contrary: it's original, it's brilliant, although shocking. The Middle Ages are depicted realisticaly, without being idealised - that's how life in the Middle Ages should have been. Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh were both very convincing, the story was quite good. Sexuality, violence, cruelty and the plague combine to make the plot adventurous, breathtaking and very shocking. But what I peticulately liked was the atmosphere- it's dark, mysterious... It's the embodiement of the spirit of the Middle Ages. To all the people who worked on this film and to all the fans out there - don't be disappointed, the value of a work of art is not measured by its critics! It's a great film and what matters is that some of us knew how to appreciate it. Read more Less

    Not too shabby

Not a bad movie for a rental. Has some good nude action of Jennifer Jason Leigh. I kind of liked the movie plot and the setting. The sets are done rather well and it seems like they did invest some money into it. Rent it some weekend or it comes on ...the pay channels sometimes late at night. Read more Less
