    A Really Great Flashback!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 29, 2000

After Travelling with the Wilburys and producing the new Beatles material, Jeff Lynne has finally returned home to reclaim his part of the ELO legacy with careful attention to producing the best collection of ELO material on 3 CDs. I was a little sk...eptical at hearing about Flashback because of the Afterglow boxed set: While it contained rare B-sides, Afterglow didn't have as much involvement by Jeff Lynne and wasn't mastered by him as you can hear in the tracks. FLASHBACK is a 180 turn from Afterglow: Jeff was involved with this project from the mixing board down to liner notes. Second, no other ELO CD in existence sounds as good or appears to be remastered the same way these songs are. It's the little things like the moog bassline of 'Turn To Stone' and how it now sounds the way I always remembered it, then there's the drum depth of 'Do Ya' and the coolness of the unedited cut of it.Equally amazing is the unreleased material and brand-new studio work from Lynne. I never knew these songs could be made new again, but through Jeff's careful hands his decent musical legacy is preserved. If you ever liked Beatles, Wilburys, or Jeff you SHOULD get this boxed set. The very fact that Electric Light Orchestra released a second three-disc box set is a tacit admission that, yes, 1987's Afterglow wasn't everything it should be. Happily, 2000's Flashback is. Assembled with the cooperation of Jeff Lynne, Flashback covers all the bases, featuring all the hits, a good selection of album tracks, and seven previously unreleased tracks, two alternate mixes and "After All," previously unavailable on CD. The sequencing is roughly chronological, with each of the three discs spotlighting a different era, then sequenced for maximum listenability within that -- so "10538 Overture" segues to "Showdown" and "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" then doubles back to the first album. It's a gambit that works, since Flashback winds up flowing as gracefully as ELO's best albums. And, make no mistake, this is one of their best albums, a rare box set that satisfies the needs of both casual and mildly dedicated fans, while offering the hardcore not just a bunch of rarities but an enjoyable al...bum with its own character. So, it trumps Afterglow in every possible way, then, and thereby eliminates the need for yet another three-disc ELO box. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Electric Light Orchestra

The Electric Light Orchestra's ambitious yet irresistible fusion of Beatlesque pop, classical arrangements, and futuristic iconography rocketed the group to massive commercial success throughout the 1970s. ELO was formed in Birmingham, England in the autumn of 1970 from the ashes of the eccentric art-pop combo the Move, reuniting frontman Roy Wood with guitarist/compose... Read more
