Flash Gordon is a professional football hero turned interplanetary crusader for freedom who came to the silver screen from the exciting comic strip adventures of cartoonist Alex Raymond (1909-1956).
"Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" was released in 1940 as the final trilogy set of cliffhanger serials featuring Buster Crabbe in the title role.
This action packed serial opens with people around the earth being indescriminately showered by a strange death ray from outer space that leaves only a purple mark on the foreheads of its victims.
The world's leading scientists soon suspect Emperor Ming the Merciless (Charles Middleton) is responsible for the "Purple Death" and promptly dispatch Flash Gordon and his team, Dr. Zarkov (Frank Shannon) and Dale Arden (Carol Hughes), to investigate the source and destroy it.
After a brief skirmish with one of the evil emperor's spaceships, Flash joins forces with Aboria, Prince Barin and the people of Frygia to end Ming's cruel tyranny within twelve chapters of non-stop action.
The VCI Entertainment DVD set is without doubt the best in quality and bonus features, as it includes a chapter serail search, classic television commercials, personal interviews with Buster Crabbe (1908-1983), and a clip from the 1932 Olympics.
This is a "Must Have" movie for motion picture serial buffs, spatial enthusiasts, nostalgia collectors, and general wholesome family entertainment.
