Pro Reviews: Flamingo Kid

  • All Music Guide

A pet project by Happy Days producer Garry Marshall, The Flamingo Kid stars Matt Dillon as a bluecollar teenager working at an upscale Long Island beach club during a hot 1963 summer. Marshall had a difficult music decision to makeuse only appropriate time period music or tap teenappealing 80's synthpop artists. The compromise was using superb 50's 60's hits for the film and Jesse Frederick's modern sounding "Breakaway" for the opening and closing sequences. The rather tepid song opens the soundtrack followed by ten timetested doo wop, RB, and dancehall classics. "Get a Job" by The Silhouettes, "(Love is Like A) Heat Wave" by Martha Reeves The Vandellas, "He's So Fine" by The Chiffons, and "It's All Right" by The Impressions are just a few of the gems that endow this nostalgic soundtrack. However, The Flamingo Kid mysteriously closes with Maureen Steele's instantly forgettable 80's throwaway "Boys Will Be Boys" even though it doesn't appear in the film, which dilutes an otherwise exc...ellent collection of early rock roll favorites. - Craig Curtice, All Music Guide Read more Less
