Synopsis: Flags of Our Fathers (2006)
Synopis: Clint Eastwood's early-21st-century output has endeared him to Academy Awards voters, and he makes another bid for their attention with this tale of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima. Eastwood cuts back and forth between the battle that led to the flag being firmly planted in enemy soil, and the tour undertaken by three of the flag-planting Marines (played by Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, and Adam Beach) in the aftermath of World War II. The re-creation of Iwo Jima features impressive APOCALYPSE NOW-style battle scenes, the air full of thick plumes of smoke, zinging bullets, and pounding explosions. But the most interesting part of the movie comes as the three men are paraded in front of the American public, as they vacillate between embarrassment and anger at the public relations campaign they find themselves embroiled in, while also pleading with the public to help provide funds for the soldiers who are still at war. Eastwood uses a script co-written by CRASH director Paul Haggis and a source book written by James Bradley, the son of John "Doc" Bradley (played by Phillippe in the film), to tell this affecting tale. Tom Stern, who worked with Eastwood on MILLION DOLLAR BABY, employs his skills as a cinematographer once again, deftly coupling vast panoramic battle scenes with darkly contemplative moments between the touring soldiers. Fascinatingly, the director's next jaunt behind the lens was LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, which provided the Japanese perspective on this famous event.Features: Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

Pros: The storyline is not your typical war movie. It takes a different angle than other war movies.
Cons: The lack of bonus features.
When Tom Brokaw wrote his book, "The Gratest Generation", he wrote that in tlaking ot the veterans of "D-Day", he let them do the talking, rather then push and prod them for stories. While this movie doesn't cover "D-Day", it opens in much the same way. The main character of this movie narrates the story as he was one of the soldiers present at the haging of the flag at Iwo Jima. His son eventually points out the very point tha Brokaw made in the beginning of his book about letting the veterans talk, rather than prod them for stories and answers.
This is something that sadly, the soldiers of this story have to endure. They are used by politicians for a massive PR campaign to get people ot buy war bonds. The politicians use the soldiers, not even caring what they or heir friends or family have gone through. It is very similar to an interview conducted by Keith Olberman a couple of years ago with one of the men hwo helped catch Saddam Hussein. The soldier was very angry in that he was told many times that he was not qualified for any job. "Doc" was told the same thing, apparently, even though he was a war hero.
This movie is also as historically accurate as possible. While the movie does not go into depth about the battle the continued even after the flag was hung both times, Eastwood makes clear that the battle was far from over. One of the characters even points out thatit went onfor another 25 days after that. He even akes note of the vehicles that were stuck in the soil because of it's makeup, and even how th Japanese soliders had a large underground network in the mountain.
This historical accuracy, along with so many other factos of this ovie make Flags of our Fathers one of the best war movies of all time, and one of the most contemplative movies to come along in years. It is a must have for any true sudent and.or fan of history. And it is a movie that will ensure that while they may be dying off evey year, the members of the Greatest Generation will never be forgotten. ...
