An early RB group, this Los Angeles ensemble began as the Toppers in 1938. Lead singer Steve Gibson, Emmett Matthews, Dave Patillo, Jimmy Springs, and Romaine Brown had a string of hits for Beacon in 1944. The biggest was "I've Learned a Lesson I'll Never Forget," their sole Top 10 RB and Top 20 pop hit. Three others peaked at number 10 RB; they were "Boogie-Woogie Ball," "Just for You," and "No One Else Will Do." Gibson was married to vocalist Damita Jo at one time, and she was in the group...
