    Firefly comes to DVD

Pros: Creator Joss Whedon responds to fans cravings!

    Cons: Series was cancelled

Firefly was a great show by Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. After only 12 episodes, Fox cancelled this great show. Fans were furious and are still easy to find all over the Web. DVD features lots of great extras, li...ke the gag reel, interviews and more. If you like Sci-fi, you'll love Firefly!! Read more Less

    Even Better than I remember

    Pros: Have the complete series

Cons: Fox cancelled the show without giving it a chance

Well written, well acted, and the most entertaining show of 2003 next to KEEN EDDIE, also cancelled by Fox.Unless it is a show entitled LAW and ORDER, or CSI, programs for intelligent people in this country just don't fly, pun intended. It is a ...shame that Fox is making money off of the series it killed, but at least the episodes were released. Each episode builds on character development, supports the overall story as far as continuity, and has witty and creative dialogue and plots. If you are a fan of SCI-FI, you cannot go wrong. If only it was on another network

    Pros: Great series

    Cons: It was on FOX

This show rocks, it is like watching live action anime, makes me think of Cowboy Bebop, but Firefly was live, and bebop was anime. The both are different, but that's what i thought of when i first watched Firefly. Too bad this series was on Fox w...here they never give any show much of a chance. There are to many shows on the air now that match up to firefly. My favorite episode is Jaynestown, gotta love it, very funny, and Jayne is one crazy feller, and one of the best characters that was. If only Firefly was on HBO, or maybe scifi to begin with, we would have been watching season 2 by nope. Hopefully there is still a future in the series, i hope it is picked up somewhere, and if it is, hopefully all, or most of the cast are back. This is great story tellin, adventure, western, anime style series worthy of anybodys DVD collection. Read more Less

They never should have cancelled the series

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 17, 2006 | 1 out of 1 found this Firefly - The Complete Series (2002) review helpful

Pros: Great collection, great show, great special effects

Cons: Series was too short; and hard to navigate menu

My only real complaint about this disc is that it is choppy and hard to navigate through the DVD menu. You don't have an option to "View All" with the episodes, so it automatically pauses at the end of each episode and kicks you back ou...t to the submenu to repeat it, or you have to go all the way back out to the main menu to select the next one. That aside, this was such a great collection by one of the best television writers in the business. I loved Whedon's "Buffy" and "Angel" series when they were still on network TV, and I was upset when this show didn't go into syndication or a second season. There are four episodes on each disc of this set, and four discs. The cast is strong; Whedon gleaned Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin from his "Angel" cast and brought in other great actors that I have never seen in anything else, namely Sean Maher (who is shockingly handsome, from the same school of heartthrobs as Tom Welling, Cillian Murphy, or Ian Somerhalder), Alan Tudyk, and Jewel Straite. "Firefly" is basically a space opera and cowboy saga, think "Young Riders" crossed with "Voyager," and that's the appeal of this show. The dialogue is witty and off-the-cuff with the one-liners and snappy retorts that Whedon is known for. My favorite episode is "War Stories." There is a perfectly gruesome torture scene where Nathan Fillion (Reynolds, the captain of Serenity, the Firefly ship of the title) and Alan Tudyk (playing the part of Wash, his navigator and helmsman) are being held captive by a gangster that has it in for Reynolds. While they're being tortured, the two of them are arguing between them about Wash's wife Zoe and whether or not she would have been better off with Reynolds! The argument in and of itself was made hysterical by the fact that they were arguing instead of begging for mercy while they were being electrocuted half to death. Veteran actor Ron Glass from "Barney Miller" is also here as Shepherd, a priest with a past. He's a better actor now than he was back then. This collection is worth the money. Read more Less

Great series that didn't get the right supporters

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 26, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Firefly - The Complete Series (2002) review helpful

Pros: New, fresh, characters you can get behind.

Cons: It is a genre that isn't the most popular.

Includes episodes that never got aired. The characters areall well developed over time. The humor is there, but it takes a bit to get used to. jokes are only funny when placed in context, that's why jokes don't translate into foreign language...s. You have to watch, and the more you watch, the funnier it is. Read more Less

    Worst Nightmare and Fondest Dream

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 16, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Firefly - The Complete Series (2002) review helpful

    Pros: Imaginative writing,great action scenes.

    Cons: cancelled without warning

Firefly was the embodiment of everything one needs to feed imagination and sense of adventure. The storyline was fast-paced and completely unpredictable. I never knew what was going to happen next! I watched every minute on the edge of my seat.Nathan... Fillon who used to play Joey Buchanan on One Life to Live, an ABC soap has grown up to be an outstanding star that I would watch in anything he did. The chemistry between him and Gina Torres on the series is breathtaking. They are both incredibly beautiful and watching them in action on screen is like poetry in motion.I was really upset when the series was cancelled. Read more Less

    Humor, action & pathos

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 29, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Firefly - The Complete Series (2002) review helpful

    Pros: Characters you care about

    Cons: Series ended too quickly

This series has it all in spades! The action is fun and realistically "not too polished". The drama will hold you and leave you wanting more. The characters are well written and well played with lots of really great and surprising humor. I... was never able to see the series on Television but after renting the DVDs - I HAD to buy the set. I figure this series - along with future movie DVDs - are a MUST for any serious TV/Movie collection! Read more Less

    Pros: Spectacular

    Cons: Too short-lived

Just watch it. It's only 14 episodes but you'll laugh and cry and wonder why this was ever cancelled!

    Another Belated Convert

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 13, 2007

Pros: Engaging characters and a storyline both different and familiar

    Cons: None

Like many, I am a late convert having learned of the show only after it's release on DVD. Indeed, I bought it on sale based on Whedon's name and the packaging. I had not yet even read any reviews. It is a shame Firefly ran no longer as it is ...easily one of the best series I have seen in a while. It has been described by some as a space-western and if one seeks to narrow the definition to preciseness, that is essentially accurate. The reality is that Firefly is pure sci-fi with a western veneer that makes the setting more easily grasped. Much of the starfaring sci-fi genre is space opera. Not so Firefly. These are little people trying to make it in a harsh world. The only operatic aspect is the Alliance interest in Simon and River but the crew of the Serenity seeks not regime change or release from oppression. Mal and his first officer have already tried that and failed. They wish only to live free and under the radar. The characters are in someways cliched. Inarra is the fancy hooker with a heart, Mal the honorable scoundrel, and Jayne, the tough guy whose bark is (slightly) worse than his bite. However, the actors and actresses are appealing and do a credible job of breathing life into their roles. I like it a lot and if I was forced to compare it to another show, it would be the Adventures of Briscoe County Junior. Too good for the common masses, I guess! Read more Less
