Pros: Spectacular
Cons: Too short-lived
Just watch it. It's only 14 episodes but you'll laugh and cry and wonder why this was ever cancelled!
Pros: Engaging characters and a storyline both different and familiar
Cons: None
Like many, I am a late convert having learned of the show only after it's release on DVD. Indeed, I bought it on sale based on Whedon's name and the packaging. I had not yet even read any reviews. It is a shame Firefly ran no longer as it is easily one of the best series I have seen in a while.
It has been described by some as a space-western and if one seeks to narrow the definition to preciseness, that is essentially accurate. The reality is that Firefly is pure sci-fi with a western veneer that makes the setting more easily grasped. Much of the starfaring sci-fi genre is space opera. Not so Firefly. These are little people trying to make it in a harsh world. The only operatic aspect is the Alliance interest in Simon and River but the crew of the Serenity seeks not regime change or release from oppression. Mal and his first officer have already tried that and failed. They wish only to live free and under the radar.
The characters are in someways cliched. Inarra is the fancy hooker with a heart, Mal the honorable scoundrel, and Jayne, the tough guy whose bark is (slightly) worse than his bite. However, the actors and actresses are appealing and do a credible job of breathing life into their roles.
I like it a lot and if I was forced to compare it to another show, it would be the Adventures of Briscoe County Junior. Too good for the common masses, I guess!
Pros: greta plot and story
Cons: they ended the series
it the story of a bunch freinds that are so close they are family and it shows how important they are to each other there is lots of actoins and humor i think most people that follow the series are waiting for more i know i am
Pros: Writing, acting...just about everything
Cons: Series was too short
I did not see the series during its original airing, seeing the movie, Serenity, first. I was impressed and ordered the Firefly series...and proceeded to be amazed at just about every aspect of the original production. After momentary confusion over chronology (the air dates had no relation to the actual plot line) I realized that the order presented in the DVD set is the correct one. How FOX could have messed up in the first place in tossing aside the Serenity episode to begin with, well...let's just say they didn't get the show to begin with. If they had, then Firefly might have had a chance.
The characters are written and acted superbly, the plot line progresses intelligently (when viewed in the correct order) and the only quibble I have at all with the series (besides ending) is that Joss probably pushed the Western theme just a tad much, though I do understand where he is coming from with that. I love the Asian influence, with even the crudest of characters casually sprinkling bits of Mandarin throughout their dialogue.
I hope to see more about Serenity and her crew in the near future.
Pros: Great cast, great writing, great show
Cons: Only 14 episodes!
Firefly was one of the best and most hard-to-define shows I've ever seen. The simplest way to sum it up is to call it a sci-fi western, but that description tends to turn people off when they hear it. It is a science fiction show: it's set in the future, and the main characters are the crew of a space ship. The western aspect plays out on some of the planets they visit, in that they are on the far edge of the colonized system, away from the more civilized and Alliance-controlled inner planets, and is enhanced by the dialogue and the fiddle-heavy soundtrack (which I happen to love). The crew of Serenity (the name of the ship) make their living as smugglers and outlaws, trying to live beyond the reach of the Alliance and so-called civilization. Even if all of this seems strange to you give a chance anyway, because it's a great show beyond the setup. The cast was wonderful, and the characters they portrayed were such a great band of archetypes who played off one another so beautifully, with such great dialogue...Well, just describing it makes me want to watch the whole thing over again. There are great bonus features on the DVD set: loads of outtakes and commentary, making-of and behind-the-scenes stuff, too. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it as soon as possible, and if you don't own it yet, what are you waiting for?
Pros: Science fiction at its finest!
Cons: It is over and som eof the characters never got the chance to shine.
I got a late introduction to Firefly just this February, but it was love at first sight!
Firefly is sci-fi at its finest: it is plausible enough, it is different enough, and it takes us to a world that very much could be reality in 500 years.
Great characters were given life by great actors. While at first I found the idea of nine major characters strange, I found that they all contributed greatly to the show. I wish there had been more time for some of them (Book, Wash) to develop a little more!
The DVD's features are great. I especially loved the Easter Egg.
Pros: Humourous, character development
Cons: One season, no continuation
I saw Serenity first and then decided to watch the firefly series afterwards because of the film. I was surprised how good the firefly series was and miss the fact that they did not pursue a second season. Character development is well done and each crew member gets a turn during the 14 episodes to show their background and true self. It is unfortunate that Fox aired them out of order and hence, it would have been difficult to follow. However, watching the DVD sets in order from series 1-14, I have to say that this is one of the best Sci-fi series I've seen since X-files. Even though some viewers might be late in watching firefly on TV (like me), I still think the series had a lot of potential!
Pros: Great collection, great show, great special effects
Cons: Series was too short; and hard to navigate menu
My only real complaint about this disc is that it is choppy and hard to navigate through the DVD menu. You don't have an option to "View All" with the episodes, so it automatically pauses at the end of each episode and kicks you back out to the submenu to repeat it, or you have to go all the way back out to the main menu to select the next one.
That aside, this was such a great collection by one of the best television writers in the business. I loved Whedon's "Buffy" and "Angel" series when they were still on network TV, and I was upset when this show didn't go into syndication or a second season.
There are four episodes on each disc of this set, and four discs. The cast is strong; Whedon gleaned Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin from his "Angel" cast and brought in other great actors that I have never seen in anything else, namely Sean Maher (who is shockingly handsome, from the same school of heartthrobs as Tom Welling, Cillian Murphy, or Ian Somerhalder), Alan Tudyk, and Jewel Straite. "Firefly" is basically a space opera and cowboy saga, think "Young Riders" crossed with "Voyager," and that's the appeal of this show. The dialogue is witty and off-the-cuff with the one-liners and snappy retorts that Whedon is known for.
My favorite episode is "War Stories." There is a perfectly gruesome torture scene where Nathan Fillion (Reynolds, the captain of Serenity, the Firefly ship of the title) and Alan Tudyk (playing the part of Wash, his navigator and helmsman) are being held captive by a gangster that has it in for Reynolds. While they're being tortured, the two of them are arguing between them about Wash's wife Zoe and whether or not she would have been better off with Reynolds! The argument in and of itself was made hysterical by the fact that they were arguing instead of begging for mercy while they were being electrocuted half to death.
Veteran actor Ron Glass from "Barney Miller" is also here as Shepherd, a priest with a past. He's a better actor now than he was back then.
This collection is worth the money.
Pros: Great story, even better actors, awesome fun
Cons: Lasted only one season
This show is a true delight for any SF fun that is looking for a well rounded story with great actors. Each show is a small movie worth taking your date to. For some mysterious reason it lasted only one season. What a shame!
Pros: the story line
Cons: non
