Pro Reviews: Fine Fretted Friend

  • All Music Guide

Sometimes studio musicians get so wrapped up in being adaptable that they lose their own playing identity. Guitarist Tony Tedesco is truly a fine player, but he's plugged into numerous sessions over the years, many requiring little more than some overtones, wah-wah filler, or half-hearted licks. His own recordings haven't always been inspired affairs either. Fine Fretted Friend, a 14-song CD containing tracks from three '80s albums, does a good job of showing that Tedesco can do more than noodle behind a vocalist or fit into a synthesized background. While these aren't always the most intense numbers, each one allows Tedesco to express much more than a couple of patented lines and some catchy hooks.
