The story of Finch's beginnings is a testament to the persistence of one of its guitarists, Randy Strohmeyer, who has long been a true fan of the Drive-Thru label. Before Finch was even a gleam in a musician's eye, he was penning fan mail and shooting it off to Drive-Thru. Later he tried to promote interest from the label in a few groups he belonged to, but the attempts fell flat. Still, Strohmeyer maintained communication with the label he admired, and even developed something of a friendship with the label's co-owner, Richard Reines. When the guitarist inevitably pitched his next project, Reines finally came through and agreed to give Finch a listen. Strohmeyer believed Reines was just being polite and listening to the band as a simple favor, but the outcome was anything but quietly polite. Instead, Reines was enthusiastically receptive to Finch, so much so that Drive-Thru soon gave the group a contract. Finch was soon recording the band's first release, a four-track EP titled Falling Into Place, which is exactly what seemed to happen so easily when the band auditioned for Reines. Producer Chris Fudurich, who has worked with RX Bandits and the Hippos, was enlisted for the recording. For the band's next project, the 13-track What It Is to Burn, the label brought in Mark Trombino, who previously worked with Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World. The band supported the 2002 release by touring with Moth. In an earlier incarnation, Finch went by the name Numb, and contained every current member of the lineup except for Strohmeyer.
