I. It is a Japananese Foreign Film.
A. Japanese creators.
B. The characters act like they are Japanese even if they are not. The suppression of emotions is common in most Asian films.
C. One of the most amazing things about this film is it's capability to leap over both cultural and language barriers. If the film is dubbed in English, all you have to do is erase the lip movement, re-record it in another language like Japanese, and recreate the lip movement to suit that language.
D. The story is the "classical asian storyline of good and evil" with a mix of Japanese mythology, Greek mythology, and other worldly philosophies. It's like watching Greek Drama in Japanese Sci-Fi Style! The characters have many dimensions to them. You really cannot tell who is good and who is evil unlike other films where it is pure good versus pure evil. An example of this "classical asian storyline of good and evil" is "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." The young girl named Jen, played by Zhang Ziyi, is a lead character in that movie. Is she good or is she evil? She stole a magic sword yet treats Shulien, played by Michel Yeoh, as her own sister. She then turns her back on her and then tries to help her save Li Mu Bai at the end. Who's side is she on? You really cannot tell.
II. This is Square Picture's first film project.
III. This is the Hironobu Sakaguchi's, the director/
A. If you look in his filmography, he has absolutely nothing!...except this film.
B. Considering this is his first film, of course he does not have as much experience as the other directors. But considering he is inexperienced puts many of the experienced directors to shame with this breakthrough of a movie!
C. Directing a movie does not come natural...not most of the time. Many of the famous directors today started small but Sakaguchi started large!
IV. This is the first PG-13 Science Fiction 100% Computer Generated Film to use Hyper-realistic Computer Generated Humans in history!
A. To ignore this film is to ignore the tragedy of September, 11, 2001. "The first PG-13 Science Fiction 100% Computer Generated Film to use Hyper-realistic Computer Generated Humans? Who cares? I'd rather see Jurassic Park III or Planet of the Apes! Wow, the dinosaurs look so real and so do the apes!"SMACK.
If the story is great, the cinematography is groundbreaking, and the amount of entertainment hits the spot, you can tell they put in a lot of effort into the movie and that is what I see in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The amount of detail is just amazing! If you do not know what is so amazing about it, the best way I can describe the movie is if an artist, like Leonardo Da Vinci, painted a realistic portrait of someone...then another one and another one!...until he has this huge flip book and if you flip it the person in that painting moves! I wrote this because I encourage you to keep an open mind to what is new. This new form of cinematography changes everything from costumes, props, and even camera techniques. The camera is no longer limited to the real world! It can move up, down, left, right, spin to the floor, fly through a great amount of space in incredible speed, and even go through walls! This is only a fraction of what it can do for there is a whole new virtual world to be explored.
I am trying to encourage you to get the DVD but in the end it will be your choice. But please, support this film so that more of these movies will be a reality in the future!
