I believe that Final Fantasy VII is the best game I have ever played. It is a must have for any Playstation or even Plasystation2 owner. The characters are believable and deep. The plot is rich and touching. It was a large step in RPGs, securing many... firsts. It pioneered the way not only for the Final Fantasy series on Playstaion but for many other RPGs as well. An overall great game, and I believe it is the best in the series without question. The systems used in this game work wonderfully once you understand them. Understanding them isn't too hard. The music score is awsome, with a new song almost every new screen. I have played it over and over. It is an original game and can still be compared to the latest games. Well, here it is folks. The Role Playing Game(RPG) that brought non-geeks into the fold. FINAL FANTASY 7. This was the very first game that I bought when I jumped ship from the Nintendo 64 (what no RPGs?) to the PS. In my opinion it is not the best p...laystation game,(that would go to the now-classic F.F.6) It is however, one of the best in the series. Here is the breakdown between 1 and 5:Graphics: 4The bulk of my score goes to the gorgeous pre-renderd backgrounds of the various caves, buildings, and towns. The look and the design of some of the towns make one wish they could actually go there. The cinemas are amazing and is probably to sole reason (due to the '97 TV ads) many purchased this game. Nevertheless the characters were rendered in 3-D(this was in the earlier days of 3-D mind you.) and the characters look very blocky and geometric...the result is a dated look in comparison to the polished look of Final Fantasy 9.Sound: 5The music score is amazing. This is one of those games that you would want the soundtrack on CD. HIGHLIGHTS: The airship score.Control: 3As with older 3-D games, you have to muck about with the D-pad (don't get me wrong, the D-pad is great! Example:Tony Hawk.) when this game could have benefited from the comfort of the analog stick.Otherwise, the menus are easy to manipulate, and moving your character around is relativly simple.Phun and playablility:5Man! there is just too much stuff to do in this game! In addition to the main story, there are side quests, hidden items, breeding and racing the ostirch-like Chocobos and mini-games make this a very deep game. The main story is good,although not as great as part 6, really keeps you playing. The characters are well written and memerable.If you have not been exposed to the Final Fantasy games (as opposed to the dissapointing box office flop.) Final Fantasy 7 is a great starting point for those who are a bit afraid of console RPGs. It's cheap ($20 or under), it's good, and it's widely available. SO GO GET IT! Read more Less

Yet, for all the boundless praise it so ri...ghtfully deserves, Final Fantasy VII is not without its shortcomings and occasional design problems. These are enough to make some gamers (who are unfamiliar with RPGs, to be sure) wonder just why anyone would bother playing through it in the first place. This is the most dazzling visual experience to date on any console. Film-quality computer-generated cinematics blend seamlessly with pre-rendered background artwork to create the strikingly realistic world of Final Fantasy VII, both beautiful in its grandeur and terrifying in its detail. The overworld and battle sequences are presented in full polygonal splendor with just a touch of texture mapping for good measure. But you haven't seen anything until you witness some of the more powerful magic spells in the game. Massive dragons heed your bidding, dwarfing your gigantic enemies tenfold; an earth titan tears the ground up from beneath your enemies' feet, flinging them aside like toy blocks. Some of these summoning spells cut to over half a dozen different camera angles as the catastrophe unfolds. Materia can be found or purchased and mixed and matched to create all sorts of interesting effects. Best of all, there are more than enough hidden Materia, weapons, and optional plot sequences in the game to merit playing it through at least twice. Some have gone as far as to call Final Fantasy VII the hands-down best game ever made. And if you enjoy a good Japanese-style RPG, chances are you will agree. However, Final Fantasy VII, for all its astonishing features, is not a game with the sort of mass appeal that its massive marketing blitz may lead you to believe. For one thing, you can't finish it in a sitting, as Final Fantasy VII will be a solid 40 to 50-hour commitment for the average role-playing gamer.
