In SATYRICON, Italian New Wave director Federico Fellini depicts the hedonistic, amoral, pre-Christian world of ancient Rome. Using the unfinished classical writings of Petronius as his guide, Fellini invents a dreamlike culture full of strange, distant characters and odd, grotesque events. Though the film lacks a definitive plot or narrative structure, its constants are Gitone (Max Born) and Encolpius (Martin Potter), whose unsavory encounters with sex, the theater, and religion are the film's focal point. Presenting a loosely structured episodic tale of decadence and depravity in ancient Rome, SATYRICON follows the adventures of two students as they negotiate their way through a variety of mishaps, dangers, and sexual encounters. What results is a bizarre journey through ancient Rome. This story is a perfect example of Fellini's accomplished skill in bringing fantasy to the screen.

    Re: Fellini's Satyricon

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 19, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Fellini Satyricon (1970) review helpful

Having read Petronius' 'Satyrica', i was most excited about seeing Fellini's film. However, i found the film rather darker in mood and subject matter than the original text. Fellini glorifies and emphasises the vulgar side of Roman life, which serv...es to remind us how harsh this, often seen as paradisal, period of history actually was. This film is grotesque yet compelling, sexually arousing yet repulisively repelling and thus allows an insight not only into Fellini's own interpretation of Petronius, but into our own dark side. With the beautiful uninhibated acting, the roman dialect, and the great attention to make-up, costume and 'death by consumption', this film is well worth seeing. An inquisitive and open mind is required. The bizare music and lighting, coupled with the hideous portrayal of many characters provides much interest and entertainment even if you don't read the subtitles! Despite the seeming lack of plot, Fellini's film opens many doors expressing the baseness in human behaviour...we can all relate to it somehow...even if we don't care to admit it. Read more Less
