    This movie is certainly not for everyone, as some simply cannot bring themselves to cope with a movie largely involving drugs. It is for mature audiences, but it is about far more than simply embarking on a mindless drug binge. Writer/journalist Rao...ul Duke (masterfully and charismatically portrayed by Johnny Depp) and his quirky attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) take to the desert to capture a story on a large motocross dirt bike race, but soon become lost in their huge stash of psychoactive drugs. They blaze a trail through Las Vegas and its surrounding areas, leaving in their wake scared and confused people, destroyed rental cars, and trashed hotel rooms.Inserted into the madness, however, are reminiscent memories of the past, written by Hunter S. Thompson and narrated by Johnny Depp that lend infinite depth and character to the movie and its cause, which is all based on experiences of the author of the original novel (Thompson).Its humor is sometimes obscure, and its underlying messages even more so, but every time I watch this masterpiece of American counterculture I see, hear or understand something new in it. If one intends to buy this movie, the criterion edition is certainly worth the little bit of extra cash it calls for; countless secrets, facts, and inside jokes are revealed that will make the movie mean so much more.     I can watch this movie 100 more times and still laugh so hard i wet myself!!! Jonny and Benicio did a wonderful job. i would like to kiss them on the cheek one day!

    Pros: Cinematography and Acting

    Cons: sound at times

    If every book could be made into a movie as well as this one, then i would never read again. Depp and Del Toro have such flawless onscreen chemistry that one wonders what life was like before they teamed up. The amount of brilliance that just Depp a...lone has onscreen (see Blow, Ed Wood, Dead Man, or Benny & Joon for proof of brilliance) totally makes this movie worth while. This is all before the mention that the movie was formed from the novel, nearly word for word, and Thompson is a genius. Why was this movie not made sooner--all of these aspects only further project this movie into an orbit around all other movies as far as brilliance and sheer genius is concerned. Despite the seeming lack of plot at times, the movie is glorious and should be mandatory for all those going into the world of film.This movie deserves much more credit than it received, end of story--if you haven't seen it, then why are you alive.If you haven't seen this movie, then you should be stabbed directly in the eye. thank you.     Nos, ma megnéztem végre ezt a filmet, amiről annyi hideget-meleget hallottam, hogy eddig képtelen voltam rászánni magam. Nem vagyok Johnny Depp rajongó, de azért kedvelem a fazont, és jó színésznek tartom. Benicio del Toroban pedig va...n valami, ami miatt muszáj megnézni (akár teamelegítővel a fején is). Tipikus drogos történetnek tűnik, és első (rá)nézésre az is fog maradni. Két dilinyós tripje Csodaországba. Egy huszadik századi Csodaországba. Szerintem mindenképp érdemes egyszer megnézni.     "We were just across Barstow when the drugs began to take hold"...... When my friends found this movie hidden away in our local movie store the quotes seemed never ending. It felt as if I knew the whole movie before I ever saw it. In a stat...e of confusion, I spent forty bucks for this dvd that I really knew nothing about. It was worth 4000! This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and I've seen too many to imagine counting. The acting is incredible! Depp and Del Torro are impecable together as well as the huge group of actors who make cameos. Words cant really tell you about this film..... all that can be said is that you will have no regrets after watching it. Read more Less
