As far as first steps go, Kevin Montgomery's Fear Nothing is on fairly solid footing. He's a little bit country, owing not in small part to the fact that his father wrote songs for Buddy Holly. And he's a little bit rock roll, perhaps credited to his mother's role as Elvis Presley's backup singer. The opening track, "Red-Blooded American Boy," quite appropriately sums up Montgomery, title and all. It's a pretty song, thoughtful and melodic, not a whole lot of edge -- signals that this is a nice guy, doing what he can, writing what he knows. You can tell he's just getting started, finding his way through the craft. He's young but smart enough to be leaning on some awfully talented crutches. No doubt AM Records had no clue how to market Montgomery. If he had leaned a little more toward one side or the other, they would have had a shot, though it's not a very likely bet they would've taken it. As the child of Buddy Holly's musical partner and Elvis Presley's backup singer, Montgomery had little choice in the matter of his musicality. With that bloodline, the nature angle is co... Read more
