The heavily gospel-influenced chanteuse scored three chart-topping RB hits in 1953-1954. From Newark, NJ, Adams joined Joe Morris' band in 1952 as featured singer. A year later, she was a star, thanks to her moving ballad "Shake a Hand" on Al Silver's New York-based Herald label. The song has proven an RB standard, covered by the likes of Little Richard and Ruth Brown.
