Classic Material...
, August 9, 2003Reviewer: T-Ray.... - See all T-Ray....'s reviews...If You've Followed Mrs. Evans's Career Over The Past 10 Years, You Already Know She Had A Thriving And Sucessful Living As A Backup Singer And Songwriter Working With Mary J. Blige And I Believe Whitney Houston As Well. Well, When You're A Extremely Talented And Sucessful Working Behind The Scenes, You Get The Narcissistic Itch To Come Out From The Background And Forge Your Way Into The Steam Of Public Conciousness As Being A Legitmate Act Worthy Of A Listen. Up Until 1995 Before The Release Of Her Debut, Faith Was Known As Nothing More Than Being The Wife Of The Notorious B.I.G (Rest In Peace Big Chris). Besides Dealing From Critics The Issues Behind Her Reasons Being With Big (Some Said That She Was Just In It For The Money And Fame) And Being Relitively Anonymous To The Mainstream, She Had A Task Ahead Of Her To Show That Not Only Was She For Real, But She Could Stand On Her Own As A Soulsinging Sista.
This Album Has To Be One Of The Most Beautifully Crafted, Sung, And Orcestrated R&B Albums To Be Made. It's Right Up There With Classics Such As Marvin Gaye's "Midnight Love" And "I Want You", R.Kelly's "12Play", And Sheeeiitt, Any Other Classic Record You Can Think Of. It Is Totally Flawless. With Her Soft Steamy Hot Alto Vocals With A Tinge Of Attitude She Brings The Sweet Ruckus On "No Other Love" (That Loops Big's "Warning" Beat). She Covers So Many Emotions Of Love From Feeling Neglected On "You Used To Love Me" (With That Classic Bouncy Bassline And Wailing Vocals) To The Ode To The Love Of Her Life On "Reasons" (Which Is Possibly The Highlight Of All The Illuminary Tracks Here). Her Telling Her Man No One Can Replace Him On The Slow Dance Groove "Ain't Nobody" (Who Can Love Me Like You Do)(PS, Check The Remix With Queen Latifah If You Can Find It). From Top To Bottom The Music Is R&B With Hip-Hop Sensibilities Without Sounding Too Slow And Dramatic. Other Standout Tracks Are "Don't Be Afraid" The Torch Song "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" With Mary J. And "Come Over" The Grooves Are Uptempo, Gospel Influenced In The Musical Flow And Very Laid Out On Setting The Mood For What The Songs Are Trying To Say. The Beats Fit The Way She Sings The Tracks On Every Cut. She Doesn't Strain Herself Or Go Somewhere She Doesn't Know How. And Even Though The Songwriting Is Regular And Textbook At Best, She Sings The Tracks So Well That You Don't Even Mind The Repetitions Of Love And Romance. It Is A Slow Jam Album Designed For Chillin In The Ride On A Summer Or Spring Night With The Top Down Or The Tool For Getting Your Freak On When You Cuddling With That Special Someone. Faith Proved Beyond The Shadow Of A Doubt She Could Do It Her Way Like Sinatra And Do It Well Like LL. This Album After Still After 8 Years Resonates As The Blueprint For How A R&B Record Should Sound. It Doesn't Reinvent The Wheel Any, But It Is Good For Following In The Footsteps It Tracks. Buy It And Enjoy... ...

Pro Reviews: Faith
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Faith Evans had written songs for a variety of new jack and hip-hop artists (including Mary J. Blige, Al Be Sure, Pebbles, and Christopher Williams) before releasing her first album, Faith. The record proves that she is as powerful in the spotlight as she is behind the scenes. Evans builds on a basic, hip-hop-influenced funk, alternating between simmering grooves and sultry ballads. Faith does have a couple of dull spots, but the album is a first-class debut. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
