Synopsis: Excel Saga - Vol. 1 (2002)

Synopis: Billed as "the ultimate parody of anime," EXCEL SAGA certainly goes out of its way to parody every convention of the genre it can. From the cloying J-pop opening, it's clear that this series' sole aim is to be a good-natured farce, one that revolves around a main character who, on the surface is not much different from any other anime heroine. However, the key difference between Excel and all those who preceded her is that Excel is completely and utterly insane and considers it her goal to to conquer the city of F. This gives the series a clear and ingenious jumping off point as it encounters Martian princesses, afro-wearing action heroes, mysterious governmental agencies, space butlers, deranged comic book authors, annoying roommates, and removable moustaches, among other things.

   The first thing that usaully tells me personally if an anime will be good is the opening song...and the upbeat, silly "Love (Loyalty)" was awesome. Excel is one of the coolest characters, especially in the first few scenes. Everything was fun and upbeat, even the dramatic parts. Though...will Excel ever get to eat a good meal? ...

   I saw this at a showing in an anime convention and instantly fell in love with is. the cute charm and wit. Everyone in the screening room was laughing at the jokes. It was a hit there, and I'm sure most people who like anime will like this one.
