  • Overall:

    Great music, poor release

By Paul M  Apr 19, 2006 | 1 out of 1 found this Excalibur [Original Soundtrack] review helpful

Pros: Only place to get Jones' score

Cons: Unfortunately it is a bootleg!

Excalibur was Trevor Jones' first major motion picture assignment (he was 32 at the time). But the composer kind of got the short shrift as director John Boorman used classical music for most of the film's key sequences. Jones' Excalbur ...score finally saw a release on this 1994 CD (which also includes the classical selections). While it is nice to have Jones' original music for the film, this is actually an illegal "pirate" CD, made without the permission of the studio, publishers or composer. Production quality is crude; Wagner's "Siegfried's Death" is cut-up and re-edited to reflect how it was use in the film. Clearly the producers of this pirate CD are film geeks, not people who love (and respect) music. The Wagner and Orff pieces heard on this CD are NOT the same performances used in the film. And Jones' "Wedding" cue is simply taken strait off the film itself, crudely edited to exclude the dialog (tho not the sound effects). Hopefully one day a legitimate CD of Trevor Jones Excalibur music will be released. But this aint it. Read more Less

    20th Anniversary Digitally Remasterd OST

    By Dan  Jul 5, 2009

Pros: Official 2001 release- Professionally produced from glass master

Cons: Hard to find except on ebay or Amazon

This is digitally remastered music released in 2001 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the films release. The same epic, heroic style of music will thrill you once again as you hear Arthur and his Knights riding into battle. The score for Excalibu...r was composed by Trevor Jones and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The soundtrack was originally released on vinyl and is now very rare. The digitally remastered 20th Anniversary edition brings out the clarity and power of the original film. Excalibur soundtrack Track listing : 1. Pro Reviews: Excalibur [Original Soundtrack]

  • All Music Guide

For his first major soundtrack project, Trevor Jones had to share screen time with Richard Wagner and Carl Orff. But even in that august company, his music holds its own, a mix of postRomantic and new age material interspersed with and decidedly antiquated folkbased sounds, pieces for tin whistle juxtaposed with works for eerie female chorus and strange musical oscillations; other works intermingle folk and classical material of extraordinary density and power. The CD also contains alternate versions of sections of the score, for the completist listener. The total score even minus the Wagner and Orff material is as spellbinding as the movie, and it's to the discredit of the business side of the production that the soundtrack (which has excellent sound) wasn't made more widely available at the time of the movie's release. As it is, the Excalibur soundtrack is a choice limitededition collector's item.
