    Epic Rules!

    By Russ  Nov 24, 1999

n 1979, 12 year old Epic Soundtracks formed The Swell Maps with his brother Nikki Sudden. His first solo album was released in 1992. Sometime between and after those two events, Epic also recorded and/or performed with Sonic Youth, Pere Ubu, Robert ...Wyatt, Mike Watt, Crime & The City Solution, Red Crayola, and countess others, as well as releasing more solo albums. His debut album Rise Above featured guests such as J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and was picked by Spin magazine as one of the “10 Best Albums Of The Year.” His next album Sleeping Star also received piles of press and Epic followed the release by doing an acoustic tour with Evan Dando of the Lemonheads, performing solo and together each night. In 1996, Epic released the Change My Life CD, and followed it with more touring, this time with a band behind him. Unfortunately, the Epic story reached an abrupt and unexpected end, when he was found dead in his London apartment in December 1997. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Everything Is Temporary

  • All Music Guide

From studio outtakes and radio broadcasts to home recordings, Soundtracks' brother and kindred musical spirit Nikki Sudden combed his sibling's massive tape collection for this posthumous tribute. The essence of Soundtracks is captured here: The gentle, under-appreciated, alienated, cult figure with a vocal range and sense of melody that at times can make you weep. There's the noise fest of "Wild Situation," yet there's a beautiful solo acoustic version of "Something New Under the Sun; " the keyboard outtake, "Caroline" is equally lovely. Alex Chilton's popular "Night Time" is also included here. Truth be told, covers are unnecessary -- Soundtracks has track upon track of his own which capture the loneliness of Big Star's Third and other sadcore touchstones. Clearly this was a songwriter worth reckoning with during his short lifetime.

Biography

Epic Soundtracks

In the '70s, Epic Soundtracks formed Swell Maps, with his brother, Nikki Sudden; the band influenced many groups, from Sonic Youth to the Lemonheads. Considering his past, it may seem strange that Epic returned in the early '90s after a long hiatus to write moving piano ballads. His first solo LP, Rise Above, featured J. Mascis and Kim Gordon, among others. He returned ... Read more
