Pros: The movie is a sequel, but it successfully manages to separate itself from Bruce Almighty. There are plenty of jokes that are okay for the entire family.
Cons: The movie is somewhat lacking in the extra features.
Evan Almighty is a sequel. There will be no argument against that here. If anything, this movie is a movie in and of itself being that the only reference made to his original role in Bruce Almighty comes at the very beginning, where he announces on air that he is leaving television to become a politician. From that point on, Evan Almighty becomes its own movie, and very successfully, so at that.
Evan Almighty is its own movie in that while Bruce Almighty presented more of a question in its plot--the question of what is it like to be God/Is God there--Evan Almighty is more of a statement and a retelling of the story of Noah.
The statement in question is one of the hypocrisy of those who call themselves Christians. It was interesting to note how when Evan Baxter began working on the Ark, even he did not fully believe, but grew to believe. God tested his faith, and saw it grow to the point that he was a true believer and follower of God's word. When he told the people watching him to get on the Ark, and they made fun of him, that was the direct statement. It was showing how when asked to do so, many people who claim themselves as Christians won't step up.
The most interesting part of Evan Almighty's story is in the discussion surrounding the odd relationship of government and religion in America today. So many other discussions could grow from that one discussion itself. That adds even more enjoyment to this movie.
For those who expected a certain brand of comedy from Steve Carrell, there is no disappointment here. The story has more than enough laughs to keep any audience in stitches. There is even a funny little reference to his work in The 40-Year Old Virgin, if one watches closely. It's kind og a WHeel of Fortune "Before and After" type of title. So look closely for that.
Evan Almighty is definitely a movie for the entire family to watch. Whether one is an evangelical Christian or someone who simply enjoys a good movie, it is a movie that can be enjoyed by the entire family time and again ...
