Pro Reviews: Eubie Blake Introducing Jim Hession

  • All Music Guide

This Lp from Eubie Blake's label features the 90-year old pianist taking five solos and allocating the second half of the program to Jim Hession, an L.A.-based pianist who was 64 years younger. Blake's remake of "Troublesome Ivories" and Scott Joplins' "Elite Syncopations" are highlights while Hession's stride performances range from James P. Johnson and Duke Ellington to Dave Brubeck and the Beatles ("Martha My Dear"). This is an interesting if now hard-to-find set.
