Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
Yanni's Tribute, If I Could Tell You, and Ethnicity are the top 3 favorite CDs I have in a collection of over 400.
I have chemo 2 times a week. By the time day #2 rolls around, I'm wiped. I leave my living room in complete darkness overnight. I have 6 CD's, all Yanni, in my cartridge for my CD player. The headphones go on and I sleep with several dozen of the best songs known to man playing through my head. THAT is how I have guts enough to go through Day 2 the next week.
Pros: Very relaxing
Cons: none
I absolutely loved this CD. I heard it performed live. It is so much better live but it is still great reproduced. Any Yanni fan will love it. The Aborigine flare it has is also a nice plus.
Michael-
Can you give me a sneak peek as to what songs are performed in his Ethnicity concert?
I'm going to see Yanni at the Nassau Coliseum this Sunday, April 13th (front row seats):-) and the anticipation is killing me :-)
Thanks!

YANNI IS THE BEST!
Yanni was great at the March 6th , Tampa concert. Make it your point to see him live and you will have a wonderful evening out.
Yanni, Thank you for a great concert.
Michael
"Or maybe your ear just can't handle the awesomeness of Yanni."
Yeah, you're right -- I guess it can't. THANK GOD.
Matt
What does Yanni do??? Besides have cosmetic surgery... Charlie Adams (drums) is beyond belief. Violins excellent! But to the music, once again, Neo-hippie drivel! Like Yanni is saying look at me and how good I am... Everbody knows that the Chamelion days were his best. How many scale runs and one man put in a "song"?
what kind of crackhead would actually call yanni's music boring??!?!?!?!?!
If you think his music is a bunch of 4 measure repeats and hasn't evolved, over a period of 20 years, you must be a very miserable person because music just doesn't get much better.
...and what's wrong with a major 2nd modulation? If you're calling the general audience strange for responding to it, then you must be the queer one, since you're just one against 50 million.
Based on your review, i doubt you could even play 4 measures and repeat it 300 times(even tho that isn't what yanni does). Or maybe your ear just can't handle the awesomeness of Yanni.
You think ure so smart, matthew?
Ure a dumb@$$!
1. Yanni doesn't write in 5/4 time.
2. I'd like to see you hire an orchestra, you peon of a man who calls yourself a critic...
3. And if you got an orchestra, i'd like to see what you could do with it. Reading your review, it wouldn't get any better than a middle school orchestra sound.
4. And if Yanni hired clowns, you'd be a part of his ensemble by now.
5. Non-threatening modes? Do you even know how many of his works go up to 4 or 5 flats?
You try to impress us with your musical technobabble jargon, hahahha. doens't work on me. i'm smarter.
And as for my review of Ethinicity...
It is dynamic, it is different, it is exciting, it is unquestionably Yanni.
The best thing about Yanni's new albums is that you don't know what to expect because his style is always changing.
I especially enjoy Rainmaker, where Yanni uses the aboriginal didgeridoo as a rhythmic instrument to give a tribal flavor.
Highlights also go to Almost a Whisper and The Promise, where lyrics were added to previously composed works.
However, the most dynamic element in the album is the use of electronic instruments indigenious of techno/trance and the increased use of bass drum, which is also original to techno/trance. Many sound effects commonly associated with electronica are used, and in Play Time, overdriven distorted guitars can be heard in the background along with the other electronic instruments.
Also surprising, is the extensive use of the female voice. Althought he may have potentially overdone this, it does add a spirtual taste to the entire album.
And, for the first time, Yanni is putting in a little touch of Irish music along with the oriental accents that are present (I would kno cuz i'm Chinese).
I am really looking forward to his 2003/04 tour. Based on what I have heard, it is supposed to be the best tour yet.
I guess this is the musical culmination of a society that is brought up on completely unchallenging, transparent garbage. Everything this clown does is a complete cliche. Every song could be written by a computer if you fed enough punch cards into it, detailing the listening tendencies of the average 37-year old, who used to listen to Debbie Gibson, then Ace of Bass, but is now looking for something 'more mature'.
The closest this guy gets to harmonic interpolation is the ol' major 2nd modulation. The audience gasps! "Ooh, he's dreamy! His Mediterranean good looks make me want to listen to more of this vanilla drivel!"
When I see Yanni, I always envision those old traveling salesmen that would hawk Magic Hair Restoration Tonic or Rejuvinating Elixers... It was all garbage, but they were so smooth, so convincing. Yanni does the same smoke and mirrors gag with his muzak. He figures, "Hey, I'm a foreign dude -- that's one point for me. Now, I'll gather AN ORCHESTRA, except I'll save a ton of money and hire clowns, because they only need to learn 4 bars of music and repeat it 300 times. I'll find some ethnic looking woman to warble over the top of it, and the punters in the crowd will be tricked into thinking this is a DEEP EXPERIENCE. Then it's MY turn. I'll surround myself with a battery of keyboards, because this is VISUALLY IMPRESSIVE. I will allow my fingers to meander through a series of non-threatening modes peppered with a tinge of exoticism (like a flat 2nd, or sharp 4). Once the panties are sufficiently moistened, I will tilt my head back and close my eyes -- I HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY THE HAND OF GOD!"
HOW TO COMPOSE LIKE YANNI IN TEN STEPS:
1) Hire an orchestra.
2) Choose a time signature (7/8 or 5/4 works well).
3) Write 4 bars of a melody.
4) Repeat for 20 minutes (vary dynamics, soloists, etc.)
5) Bring to a MIGHTY CRESCENDO
6) Modulate up a major 2nd (Yanni's bringin' it home now!!!)
7) End on a dime with a mighty flourish and dramatic sweep of the right arm.
8) Bask in undeserved applause.
9) Log on and check bank account.
10)Smile -- YOU'RE YANNI!
This CD is just pure awesomeness!
This CD, along with is sparkly production, as one of his best and most unique. I particularly liked the way he incorporates "techno" into some of his songs.
The lyrics for Almost a Whisper are wonderful, they still send shivers up my spine.
There is so much more i could say about this album, but you really just have to hear for yourself in order to believe the coolness of this cd.
I just bought this ablum this afternoon and I have yet to take it out of my CD player! After hearing this CD and seeing the DVD that was included in the package deal, I am more than ready to see Yanni in concert in May in Green Bay! This album is more colorful than the other albums. This has a lot of vocals just like in the Tribute album but I think this one tops that one! ENJOY!
