If the title Essential Dale Watson leads you to expect a collection that will give a (reasonably) complete picture of the first 12 years in the musical life of this hardcore honky tonk man well, that isn't what you get. Watson's first three albums were recorded for the wellrespected roots music label Hightone Records, and many fans will tell you they represent his best work in the studio. Those three albums aren't represented on Essential Dale Watson, which instead pulls its 11 songs from three later releases the first five songs are from 2004's Dreamland, four originally appeared on 2002's Live in London, England, and two were recorded for 2001's Every Song I Write Is for You. All three are fine albums, but both Dreamland and Every Song I Write Is for You focus more on softer tales of love and heartbreak than the flinty honky tonk sides that show Watson to his best advantage, and while the rowdier cuts from Live in London, England capture the man in his element, by the time they get the disc rolling in fourth gear, the album is over. (And whoever compiled this disc made the increasingly common mistake of leaving on the chatter that appeared at the end of the live cuts, so Watson ends up introducing songs other than the ones that actually appear here.) The material that appears on this disc is good stuff from one of best straightahead country acts at work today, but the sequence and choice of material leaves something to be desired, and the title all but demands an argument. Pick up one of the albums that provided the material for this compilation and you'll be better off.
