    Some of Her Best Work

    By __A_YAHOO_USER__  Jun 12, 2006

Pros: This collection includes some of the most popular of Dolly's Work

Cons: Some tracks are a little dated but all excellent

First of all if you dismiss Dolly Parton as a novelty of yesterday you are sorely mistaken. This woman is a true preformer and has accomplished more than most female country artists of her time. Not only is her craft unmatched but she continues today... with her legacy of good music. If you are new to Dolly or a die-hard fan this collection is a must have. It includes her biggest hits of the 80s and includes; "9to5", "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind", "Real Love", "Islands in the Stream", "To Daddy" and many many more. Buy volume One along with this C.D. its worth your buck. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Essential Dolly Parton, Vol. 1: I Will Always Love You

  • All Music Guide

This set kicked off RCA's long-overdue "essential" reissue series with a package by country's best-known ambassador, Dolly Parton. The volume one imprint on the album implies that there will be another Parton set, which is good news, considering that this set is geared toward her late-'70s and thereafter pop recordings. Parton fans must demand a respectful set featuring Parton's very early hits, when she was hungry to establish herself -- songs like "Mule Skinner Blues," "Try Being Lonely," "Joshua," "She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like)," "Coat of Many Colors," "Touch Your Woman," "Dumb Blonde," "The Bargin Store," or "Just Because I'm a Woman." And how about throwing in a couple of Porter Wagoner duets like "If Teardrops Were Pennies" or "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" for good measure?Kenny Rogers; and the title song from the 1980 film 9 to 5. The rest of the material is divided between what RCA hoped to cross over to the pop charts and what they planned to program to Parton's base c...ountry audience. Of the former there is the spirited "Think About Love" and the all-out MOR ballads "Starting Over Again" and "You're the Only One." As for the latter, there are the fun, snappy "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind," "Sweet Summer Lovin'," and "Heartbreak Express," among others. - Bill Carpenter, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Dolly Parton

It's difficult to find a country performer who has moved from country roots to international fame more successfully than Dolly Parton. Her autobiographical single "Coat of Many Colors" shows the poverty of growing up one of 12 children on a run-down farm in Locust Ridge, TN. At 12 years old she was appearing on Knoxville television; at 13 she was recording on a small la... Read more
