In order to turn the tables on the male-dominated genre of erotica, three women filmmakers came together to present this triptych of sexually-charged, disparate vignettes. In order to turn the tables on the male-dominated genre of erotica, three women filmmakers came together to present this triptych of sexually-charged, disparate vignettes. Lizzie Borden's LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX concerns Rosie (Kamala Lopez-Dawson), a budding Latino actress, who takes a job at a phone sex company in order to pay the bills. When she finds a sympathetic customer in Dr. Robert Stern (Bryan Cranston), a dangerously intense phone relationship commences, culminating in a face-to-face meeting between the two. Monika Treut's TABOO PARLOR, set in Hamburg, finds a lesbian couple (played by Priscilla Barnes and Camilla Soeberg) bringing an attractive man (Michael Carr) home for the novelty value. But before he can fully comprehend their true intentions, the role reversal has taken place and he has become the tortured victim. Clara Law's WONTON SOUP follows a distraught Hong Kong man, Adrian (Tim Lounibos), who is determined to win the affections of Ann (Hayley Man) by rekindling their spent passions with a series of outrageously hysterical aphrodisiac recipes. At turns brutal, erotic, and comical, EROTIQUE is a refreshing burst of female-flavored sensuality from three world-renowned directors. (NOTE: Most video releases carry a fourth vignette, Ana Maria Magalhaes's FINAL CALL.)

User Reviews: Erotique (1995)

  • Overall:

    Welcome to Skinemax

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 20, 2001

4 short films that tackles sex & relationships from a woman'sPOV -- well, i guess woman are hornier than men. One of thefilms is great, one interesting, one unbelievable but good, and one silly. There are many sex scenes throughout, nonemore creati...ve than anything you see on Skinemax on any randomnight.Wonton Soup is the lone good film. It explores the relationshipbetween a Hong Kong native and a Chinese guy who lives inAustralia. Their cultural differences may never let them beas intimate as they'd like but they may closer than they realized. The cinematography in this movie is amazing; the colors washout the picture, creating a very slow sense of time. The finalscenes use this effect masterfully. The 3rd film has potential -- a woman is raped on a train rideto Rio but is saved by a photographer. It just so happens thisphotographer has had his eye on her for awhile and an intensesexual relationship begins. I question the speed the relationshipbegins since it's about 2 days after being raped. However, thewriter does explore some good psychological terrain betweenthe two (especially when he calls her a "whore".)Let's Talk about Sex details a fantasy many probably have --having intimate phone sex w/ a stranger you've never met. The2 have a very believable relationship (the power of fantasiesisn't the fantasy itself, it's the fantasy of the person you'resharing it with -- the fantasy we're witness to is nothing new.)Of course, the movie takes a wrong turn when the woman mustmeet the man.Taboo Parlor is a silly piece -- the writer watched Thelma andLouis one too many times. The premise starts off w/ promise:2 lesbians who decide to bring a man into their relationshipfor one night. Unfortunately, the premise is the most interstingpart. The actor playing the man is dreadful, he acts very muchlike a stereo-typed "man", and we never touch the surface of what could be very interesting power relationships/
dynamicsbetween the 3.Overall, Wonton Soup and the 3rd film are films that successfullyexplore sexual relationships between men & women. Both are good films that could stand on any number of merits -- writing, directing, cinematography, etc. Let's Talk About Sex has potential but is ruined by the silly soft-porn ending (and fantasy.) Taboo Parlor is a waste -- lots of wasted potential. If you buy/rent this, be prepared for lots of unimaginativesex scenes.
