Bruce Lee was immortalized in his films as a martial arts master and first-class entertainer. ENTER THE DRAGON was the first martial arts film that American audiences had witnessed, and was actually produced in both Hong Kong and Hollywood. Interestingly, ENTER THE DRAGON also set the stage for non-traditional, culturally specific narratives to make their way into Hollywood.

Bruce Lee plays a kung fu master recruited by a foreign government to infiltrate the island of a megalomaniac martial artist named Han. Han's bodyguard is also found to have killed Lee's sister, giving Lee a personal vendetta to fight for. The Hall of Mirrors sequence towards the end of the film is now famous, as are Lee's incredibly gymnastic martial arts abilities. This trend-setting film holds up as an entertaining, engaging action movie, more than 30 years later.

Pros: Lots of commentaries and special features including the original uncut Game of Death

Cons: Hong Kong scene of Bruce Lee's philosophy left in the cut, when it was originally edited out.

Enter the Dragon is still by far the standard to which all other martial arts movies aspire to. It is well paced with characters, racisms of the 70s that dog Jim Kelly, and also have cameo appearances of Bolo Yeung (the referee), Sammo Hung (the fat ...guy in the first fight doing his own back flip), and Jackie Chan as an extra. Bruce Lee fights well, sweats well, and looks cool whaling on individuals and groups... In his duel with O'Hara, check out his "falling down" kick to the nether-region... if you slow-mo it... its a crack-up. No blue screen, green screen, computer touch-ups, or major wire work... just fast action moves... Homage movies include Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon (with Bruce LeRoy), Van Damme's Kickboxer, et al. Finally what is often lost is how athletic Bruce Lee was and also how outspoken. For an immigrant (though he was American-born) with a Chinese accent, and though he has few lines, he speaks his mind and expresses his anger and sadness. Read more Less
