    Pros: Much variation, atmospheric

Cons: Some controversial political issues addressed

From the moment you first hit the Play button, Maynard's voice whispers through the speakers and into your ears to the sound of a glockenspiel ringing an ominous melody, and sends shivers down your spine.. Not just from the beautiful sound that h...its you, but from the powerful lyrics that set up the imagery of a battlefield full of skulls. Such deep words as "From dehumanization to arms production, To hasten the nation towards its destruction" reverberate and fill the mind..Then the second track begins and instantly you're thrusted into the words of "Imagine there's no Heaven" with nothing but the piano playing what feels like a war march.. Soon, however, the percussion and bass guitar kick in with orchestrated strings ringing throughout, and along with Maynard's awesome vocals, makes for an awesome experience in itself. What grasped me by the throat was the fact that this song is actually a remix of one of John Lennon's own!The third track is no less impressive as the guitarwork plays out like a nightmare gone good (a good thing to be sure) and Maynard's brilliant vocals and lyrics make it all the better yet again. Strings later come into the song as an undertone, as the song builds into a rhythmic ensemble of emotion and powerful sounds. From here on, the songs stay at their high standard, as is expected to come from A Perfect Circle. Their tenth track, "Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums" is an extremely dark remix of "Pet" from the previous album, "Thirteenth Step". It draws on for quite some time, and its continuous beatflow is hypnotizing to say the least.Track 11, "When The Levee Breaks", is a sudden contrast from the somewhat bold track 10, and begins with a solemn yet peaceful beat with a somewhat expressional bass-line. The piano rings throughout, and the vocals operate in harmony to create an overall ambient, almost dream-like feel. It is also most likely my most favoured track featured in eMOTIVe.The final track, Fiddle And The Drum, shows off more of Maynard's vocal abilities as he proceeds to close the album with a piece in acapella. The lyrics themselves are incredibly deep and almost mournful, as they speak of a nation's fall into using war as a means of acquisition rather than peace; similar to the meaning behind the first opening track. The only real "downfall" of this album is the fact that they express much "anti-Bush" campaigning, but that is more evident in their film clips (particularly track 10). This could spark a lot of commotion from supporters of the Bush Administration, though it's not likely to deter too many listeners because of the awesome sound that hooks you anyway. It is clear that APC's new album, eMOTIVe, is a hard-hitting amalgam of beautiful sounds of varying moods and tones, and is a definite must-buy for fans of APC, and I encourage anyone who isn't a fan of theirs to at least check it out. A Perfect Circle makes another Perfect CD

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 4, 2004 | 4 out of 6 found this Emotive review helpful

Pros: Crazy covers of songs from times of war. Some new ones from them too, trent reznor added some of his nine inch nails help on this cd

    Cons: NONE

Lets start off by saying that Maynard James Keenan is a genius. The way he puts music together is just amazing. I was reading that Trent Reznor did a song with him on this cd. First of all this cd is a cover cd of war tunes from the 60's. Li...ke Marvin Gayes "Whats goning on" and John Lennon's "Imagin", it also has a remixed version of "Counting bodies like sheep to the rythem of the war drums" From their last cd The Thirteenth step. Which was a great cd.SO... I suggest you go out and pick this lovely cd up....Its a great one Read more Less

    A Perfect Cirlce "Emotive"

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 11, 2004 | 2 out of 3 found this Emotive review helpful

    Pros: Great sound

Cons: album weighed down by retoric

As in most A Perfect Circle music, Emotive is very politicaly/socialy charged. Unfortunately the message is so loud you may not be able to enjoy the music. If your looking for hard and fast rock you won't find it here. Most of the CD is very s...low including a (flacid) totally unneccessary cover of "Imagine". If you are already a fan of A Perfect Circle you will enjoy this offering (with it's well writen lyrics and always creative sound scapes, as well as the mock war posters in the album sleeve) though not as much as their first two. New listeners will undoubtibly be turned off by the slow movement of the CD and the almost preaching anti-war lyrics. Read more Less

Pros: Good choices of songs to re-make

Cons: you want to take your own life after the meloncholy hits you...

I love APC and Tool. Maynard and crew are the most interesting, socially charged, and talented. That combination cannot be found on your usual Stink 182 album or on many bands recent albums. The songs APC are redoing are great songs, but I thought th...at they took some uplifting songs and gave them a shot of heroin. Imagine is my favorite track on the album despite its disonant sounds. The rest of the album is remakes that have joined the darkside. After completing the CD,I just wanted to listen to U2, or Tears for Fears after the APC album to bring back sort of a smile and get rid of the sneer. It was so dark, almost too dark for my tastes. Elvis Costello's song is pretty much unrecognizable. All in all par for the course for APC, but the songs were never meant to convey THAT much angst by their original writers. Read more Less

    Pros: It's APC music!

Cons: Remakes of previous artist's songs

I like this CD the more and more I listen to it. At first I thought it was a little corny, but I've grown really attached to it over the last couple weeks. I'm a big fan of A Perfect Circle/Maynard/Howerdel, so this CD is pretty sweet.

    Pros: Great cover

Cons: Overhiped droppings of 60s peace and protest songs

First let me say that I love Tool and APC. I have been a fan from the beginning. This offering like so many other make love not war titles coming out are just limp. I have nothing against making a political statement, in fact Im all for it. But go ge...t your own vibe. Why go back and resurect a bunch of ancient tunes from another totally different time and situation. This conflict needs its own detractors,Its own John Lennons,Its own protest songs. If Maynard feels as much hate for the war as he appears to, why not put his ample lyrical ability to work and generate some real raw emotion, some real anger, some real anything. We need our own heros not a bunch of resurected iconic spluge. All I am saying is give new a chance!!!!! Read more Less

Pros: fills a gap in a music world thats becoming very chessey

Cons: powerful words that will def not be for most ppl

when i heard prefect circle were doing a new album i wasnt sure how they could improve on what they have done. esp when i heard they were doing a cover of imagine, but after hearing it i decided there version shows a darker side to the song.. esp if ...u are luck enough to have seen the video for it.each song becomes more and more intense but ends with a quiet song much in the way it startand what can i say this song is well above my expectations if u like tool or perfect circle or just something that is defferant then this is the cd for you Read more Less

    A Perfect Circle

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 9, 2006

Pros: Their ability to re-engineer old songs to fit into today.

    Cons: only 12 tracks.

eMOTIVe is an album of a dynamic translation from a previous generation to a modern date; led by the minds of Billy Howerdel and Maynard James Keenan. The album was choreographed in a manner of building the listener up to a high and then to a low in ...order to evoke an emotion. All but two songs on eMOTIVe were re-engineered (a.k.a.: a cover). Each cover on the album seemed to have the feeling of been broken down to its core components, re-fabricated then fine tuned into a product of self-subjective vulnerability perusable to an image that only A Perfect Circle could have produced. All said eMOTIVe struck me to be controversial ONLY due to the times we live in today. This album is vary positive in nature but only to address issues such as war, greed, ignorance, peace, and love. I personally felt this album to be a wise choice and a wise selection by A.P.C. to venture into past relevant emotions and revamp them to todays troubling times. (ex: the drum line dubbed almost symbolize the division and confusion in the nation today on the song “Let’s Have a War”) I believe that A Perfect Circle achieved in making a masterpiece that the listener will walk away with some kind of emotion and opinion. I give eMOTIVe a 5 out of 5. – what’s so funny about peace love and understanding? - Read more Less
