After a series of debacles that started with the maligned Glitter down to the dismal performance of her 2002 release Charmbracelet, the biggest-selling female artist of all time finally got the groove that earned her another generation of fans that will keep her star afloat for years to come.
The Emancipation of Mimi, while not as revolutionary as her 1997 opus Butterfly, is Carey's most consistent album in years. Veering away from formulaic ballads and uninspired R&B collaborations, her latest work infuses contemporary and old-school R&B in perfect balance, while keeping touches of hiphop subtle yet impactful. While her signature ballads (Mine Again, Circles) stay, she infuses them with less hints of pop and more of an updated 70s vibe that keep this collection of songs thematic rather than blurry.
Carey stretches her vocals in the ballad "Mine Again" so much it distracts away from the old school 70s vibe that make it more traditional R&B than pop; however in "Circles" she diplays her rich mid-range amidst a backdrop of vocals that harken old soul. Carey has also learned not to make an album overwhelmed with rappers that overtake rather than compliment, keeping verses subdued ("Get Your Number", "Say Something").
With a few missteps (the minimalist "To the Floor" serves as the only filler track), Carey soars when her vocals are neither over-strained nor breathy: in "We Belong Together" Carey deftly attackes each line like a R&B virtuoso then leaps an octave to showcase the powerhouse vocals she is known for. Tracks like "Stay the Night" though, suffer from too much of this powerhouse - where vocals sound more like controlled wails that showcase rather than express . It is when she keeps the vocals organic and song-driven where she sets her talent apart -- the gospel-themed "Fly Like a Bird" provides a fitting, rousing ending to an album that will hail a new beginning for Carey.Was this review helpful? The #1 Selling Female Artist of All Time is Back and By Popular Demand. She has had unprecedented success over the years and has been consistent with her approach proving that true talent will always prove itself. Rumors have spread about the state of her voice but aside from the album, watching Miss Carey live is something nothing less than amazing. The energy and uncompromising vocals cannot be compared. With her rugged schedule as an artist, it is good to see that she is able to relax and enjoy her success as an artist residing at the top of the charts. The days of being pressured to possibly retire after Glitter are over. As R&B's supreme diva, MIMI has done it again and proved Mottola did not have control over her life. 2007 will be the new album! Look out everyone!

"The Emancipation of Mimi" finds me, once again, in the unusual position of defending Mariah Carey, a singer I strongly resisted during much of her chart supremacy in the 1990s. It wasn't until she dropped the sterile ballads and got a little soul in her groove with the help of hip hop producers did I begin to warm up to her. And I'll also risk ridicule by testifying that I did actually like "Charmbracelet" and the soundtrack to "Glitter," whose movie dealt a near fatal blow to Mariah's career. Say what you will about her fashion taste and her career moves, but one thing is certain: this lady can sing, and as "The Emancipation of Mimi" proves, the voice is far from shot. On her third album since leaving Sony, Mariah delivers a mix of hip hop dance cuts and retro-themed ballads, all set to highlight Mariah's still-there vocal range. The strongest cuts, no doubt, are the ballads, whether they're slick r&b numbers ("We Belong Together") or old school throwbacks ("Mine Again"). But the best of the bunch is "Circles," in which Mariah's voice takes off with full force without the dramatic oversinging that she was known for in the 1990s. Compared to her other albums, "Mimi" could very well be her most soulful effort to date. She spread her wings like a butterfly; she saw the rainbow; made it through the rain, and she's now emancipated.

One of mariahs best. with great back ground vocals by the soon to be reknowned artist MELONIE DANIELS. On my favorite song on the album "fly like a bird" you can clearly hear the melodic saprono in the chorus. Just simply awesome!!!!!

HER LAST CD IS LIKE CRAP COMPARED TO THIS ONE. ALL THE CALABO'S WERE GREAT PICKS AND OF COURSE IT'S JUST GREAT TO HEAR SUCH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE. SHE DID HER THANG AND I AINT MAD AT HER.

The 'Emancipation Of Mimi' CD from 2005 was a suprise, and this new Ultra Platinum Edition seems to be an attempt by Island Records to continue cashing in on Mariah's BIG comeback. If you didn't buy the original release, then I would recommend that you get the new Ultra Platinum Edition ASAP!!
Here's some advice for those who purchased the original CD in 2005...Simply download the 4 new songs for a buck a track! There's no need to buy yet another version of 'The Emancipation Of Mimi' (DVD or no DVD!), when you can add the new tracks yourself. In addition to the 4 new songs on the official Ultra Platinum Edition, I recommend that when you remaster the CD, include the COOL B-Sides 'Sprung', 'Secret Love'!
Also add BONUS REMIXES of 'Shake It Off'(ft.Jay-Z & Young Jeezy) & 'Don't Forget About Us' (ft.Bone Thugz-n-Harmony)!! This way you can ADD 6 new tracks to your original 'Emancipation' CD, and have a CD that's MUCH better than the official Ultra Platinum version!
BTW, the B-Sides ('Sprung' & 'Secret Love') can be found on a variety of Mariah's CD singles! It's just that simple, save money, relax, don't hate, and enjoy Mariah's new music (on your own terms!)! Once again, congratulations to Mariah Carey for making the comeback of the year!

All the songs on This CD are very good.
Each song is better each time I play it.
The vocals are great, as expected. But what impressed me was the feel of the album.
My favorite song on this album is "we belong together".
It shows her vocal range very well. Carey's high voice and 20 age look brings out her high pitched pearly voice.
And about her trying to be Beyounce thats really crazy.
SHe does not sound like Beyonce.
Mariahs voice is ten times better than Beyonces.

Okay, I have to say that I have never been more annoyed with Mariah Carey's voice until now with this multiplatnium album! I'm sorry, I just don't like her music the way I use to. I'd rather listen to Slipknot if I was locked in a room for 3 in a 1/2 days. I just don't like this album. Somebody pass me the barf bag before I vomit of boredom!
