This is a sad recording... yet, like a car accident, it is oddly compelling.Anyone who remembers the initial airing of the television special in October of 1977 recalls the horror of what was transpiring in front of the cameras. Why wasn't this guy ...in a hospital?Still, Presley's voice is surprisingly strong for a guy who was clearly dying, and the fact that he was onstage trying to compete with a titanic orchestra and kick-ass combo says a lot about his courage as an artist.Highlights include "See See Rider", the opening track. Elvis' voice is strong and he clearly wants to make a good first impression. It's unfortunate that it falls apart quickly with weak versions of "That's All Right" and horrific renditions of "Teddy Bear" and "Don't Be Cruel". Elvis was meandaring the stage at this point, and obviously couldn't hear himself in the monitors... otherwise he would have, well, died ON-THE-SPOT.The second half of the record is below par, although "How Great Thou Art" is majestic and, given Presley's physical decline, of special significance. The second portion of the set is better. "I Got A Woman" is as bluesy as it gets and it's followed by a down, dark and low version of "Love Me"... (check out the funky lounge piano).Elvis salvages some of his dignity with a powerful rendition of "It's Now Or Never", although Sherill Nielson does some doubling here, and "Trying To Get To You" ends the set with one of the best live recordings Elvis ever made. It's too bad this material didn't highlight the television show.Elvis should have been allowed to end his career with something more dignified, but there is a strange type but there is a strange form of dignity here. Elvis is TRYING. He could just as easily have been at home, shooting flashbulbs out of the Graceland swimming pool while maintaining a nice, Percodan buzz. There truly IS good music here... it's just dificult to hear above the death rattle.-Mark Spangler Read more Less

    The final elvis tour

A lot of people put this album down saying elvis was a mere shadow of himslef, but he still had his voice and this album is awesome. IT goes though fans telling us about elvis and their feelings about him to his father saying farewell. the music is ...very good as it is for a cbs tv special he puts a lot of effort in singing 60s hits such as its now or never are you lonesome tonight, little sister and cant help falling in love. he also does some of his newer songs such as hurt, early morning rain and if you love me let me know and the classics love me, jailhouse rock, how great thou art and my way. on the whole a must have for real elvis fans. Pro Reviews: Elvis in Concert (Remastered)

Astonishingly, given Elvis Presley's physical condition, he (or his management) agreed to film a TV special in June 1977 at two concerts held in Omaha and Rapid City, SD. There was no soundtrack album scheduled, and it's hard to believe that CBS-TV actually would have aired the show if Presley hadn't died two months later, making it his final recorded performance, and making his records big sellers again. CBS showed the one-hour special on October 3, 1977, and RCA released this double-LP set, in which Presley walks through some of his best-known numbers, his fans are heard praising him, and his father signs off mournfully (in the middle of the album). "My Way," released as a single, made the Top 40 and went gold, and it and "Unchained Melody" made the Country Top Ten, while the album was platinum within two weeks. But it is Elvis Presley's least as well as his last.

Biography

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley may be the single most important figure in American 20th century popular music. Not necessarily the best, and certainly not the most consistent. But no one could argue with the fact that he was the musician most responsible for popularizing rock roll on an international level. Viewed in cold sales figures, his impact was phenomenal. Dozens upon dozens of ... Read more
