    Ella Could Still Swing It

By The Legend  Oct 16, 2006

    Pros: It's Ella. Need more?

Cons: The album was recorded after the bossa nova craze hit the U.S. So, this album was pretty much forgotten except for fans of both Ella and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Antonio Carlos Jobim was one of the best singer/songwriters of all time. Many have done songbook tributes, and this one is one of the best. Ella's voice was a mere shadow of her glory years, but her control of her lower register was impeccable. O...f course, her scatting, especially on "The Boy from Impanema," was hard hitting. She romps through "Somewhere in the Hills," and her interpretation of "Wave" was beautiful. She also sprinkles some Portugese in a few songs. As if the language wasn't romantic enough, Ella delivers with perfect diction and timing. This is a CD that you can listen to with your sweetheart, some candlelight, and a glass of your favorite drink. Unfortunately, this CD was recorded in 1981, about 15 years or so after the bossa nova craze hit the United States, so it didn't receive the notoriety of her previous songbooks. Again, her voice may not have sounded like it did 20 years previously, but on this recording, Ella is firmly in control. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Ella Abraca Jobim [Original CD]

  • All Music Guide

For years, "The Girl From Ipanema" was a staple in Ella Fitzgerald's songbook, so it's something of a wonder that it was not until 1981 that Ella Abraca Jobim, Fitzgerald's double-album immersion in Antonio Carlos Jobim's back catalogue, appeared. Ella's first single-composer release since 1964's tribute to Jerome Kern, Ella Abraca Jobim is, more than anything, final proof of the unassuming Brazilian's place in jazz history alongside the great composers. Sadly Jobim's mellow bossa nova, drenched in the Brazilian concept of saudade, or agreeable melancholy, doesn't necessarily gel with Fitzgerald's swing-based and energetic vocal style. Fitzgerald and her small group take songs like "Agua de Beber (Water To Drink)" at just slightly too speedy a tempo, rushing a bit where they should be gamboling. Fitzgerald is in very good voice compared to some other recordings from her later years, though sadly, she's clearly not at her peak. Norman Granz's production is typically excellent, however, ...and the arrangements are refreshingly free of the typical late '70s/early '80s post-fusion clichés. Neither Fitzgerald nor Jobim's finest, then, but not without merit. - Stewart Mason, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Ella Fitzgerald

"The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time (although some may vote for Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday). Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution; one could always understand the words she sang. The one fault was tha... Read more
