Pro Reviews: Eliot Lipp

  • All Music Guide

Eliot Lipp drops into the same space occupied by quasiabstract beat makers Prefuse 73 and Dabrye, while continuing in the lineage staked out by some of the producers gathered on the Mo' Wax Headz series. He stacks up to none of them, but not without leaving an impression, on his first album for Eastern Developments (the label run by Prefuse 73, also the temporary home of Dabrye). Though all of these tracks are sharply assembled without the use of overfamiliar sounds and overused samples, most aren't likely to stick in your head for any extended length of time. One exception is "Oneknot," where a twiney funk guitar rolls over a spare fournote bass riff and a drum break where you can practically see decades of collected dust popping off the kit with each hit.
