I thought this was a wonderful movie and as the Christmas season approaches, I thought it should be on my list. I haven't been the biggest Will Ferrell fan in the world and James Caan is okay, but together in this movie, it is hilarious!!! I love Santa movies in general and Christmas movies in general, but I thought this one stood out. However, I wish I could of done a review of Planes, Trains, & Automobiles first, before this review. I think that is one of the all time classics and a Thanksgiving movie to boot (before the Christmas season), but it wasn't listed for review, so I'm taking what I can get. But seriously, watch Elf, but only after seeing Planes, Trains, & Automobiles!!!

This is a whimsical little comedy that manages to recapture some of the innocent charm of earlier Christmas movies. Without stooping to some of the potty or mean-spirited humor of more recent Christmas comedies, it tells the story of a human man who is raised to believe he is an elf. When he discovers he is not an elf he travels to New York City to find his true father. It's an "elf out of water" type of story.

I bought Elf for Christmas comedy entertainment. I have enjoyed some of Will Ferrells work on Saturday Night Live so was looking forward to the film. The premise of the movie sounds good, and having Will Ferrell be a goofy elf is a natural. However, the writing is not good, and the casting is creepy. Ed Asner as Santa? How about Ed Asner as scrouge. He is just to gruff and scary to be the jolly old Saint Nick. And James Caan as the Elfs real Dad. Caan tries to show a warmed side, but you alway thinks he really wants to pull out a gun and shoot the Elf. Bob Newhart would have been better cast as the real dad. This movie also has poor/non-existent special effects. Will Ferrell needs good writers behind him to "be funny". He is not a Jim Carey or Robin Williams who are natural comedic talents.

This movie is an instant classic! I loved how Will Ferrells portrayl of Buddy made us feel ackward and in wondermeant at the same time, a true genious! I'll take that trip through CandyCane Forest everytime!
