    Album surpasses all expectations

I've had my hands on a copy for a couple of weeks now (vinyl was released early and actually got mp3's off that, quality is still good) and I have not been able to take this damn cd out of my player....its just that great... fave songs include cold, ...cold night (where meg breaks out and actually sings [MAJOR bass chords on this song, will rock ur sub to death], dont know if she sang on pre-white blood cells material), dont know what to do with myself (has a GREAT guitar riff by Jack), hyptotize, air near my fingers, hardest button to button, and the acoustic "got her in your pocket"...(I'm noticing I've named half the album as favorite, and only because I don't want to list the entire track listing here)...and Seven Nation Army is just great, it's making it's radio play and deserves it...Their sound is copmletely refined and matures by the track...you can feel the emotion and see the effort behind this. If you liked white blood cells (much like my roommate and myself) you will absolutely LOVE elephant, we werent even expecting such a great album, and I will be sure to buy the CD version on the 1st because it's an album that's actually worth the money...It truly lives up to the name, because if this CD were compared to other CD's of simliar fare, this is a juggernaut Read more Less

    Pros: Everything

The White Stripes kick ass! I knew after I first heard "Fell in Love with a Girl". Their music rocks and will never cease to amaze me. Every CD only gets better. I can't wait until their next one! I will be the first in line to buy it! ...Every song on Elephant and the others are so fricking awesome! I have to listen to all of them all the way through (and maybe a couple more times after that). I give Elephant and every other CD 5 stars! GO OUT AND GET THEM NOW! overrated

They may be orginal, but the rolling stone mag. giving this album 5 stars is a joke. I have lost most faith in the mag. in them giving this hyped up album a classic review. Its orginal, but there are many better bands producing better music. But that...s ok, there is much worse bands out there like linkin park. So its overrated, its okay, but its not anything near life changing or classic Read more Less

the album is not that bad for a band who try desperatly to sound like people used to do 40 years ago. whats the point? The point is, 40 years ago, the music sound a lot more catchy than this album does

    The White Stripes

Pros: Amazing one of a kind tracks

Cons: Still getting use to some of the tracks

I just purchased this CD. I've been in love with "Seven Nation Army" for awhile now it doesn't get much better than that. I'm risking eviction every time that song starts to play, I can't help turning the volume up really hi...gh. "The hardest Button to Button" has an amazing sound to it as well; Another house shaker. Although some lyrics are a bit unsettling I can easily dismiss what jack White is actually referencing when the guitar and piano take hold. Meg White rocks on the drums, which as a girl who herself dreams of playing the drums in a rock band, is totally inspiring to me. This CD is original and hits the heart of what Rock was meant to sound like. Read more Less

The Return of Rock: With A Vengeance

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 29, 2004

Pros: Rcok 'N' Roll with a twist

Cons: Jack hogging the mic when he knows damn well his sister can sing

Months ago when Rolling Stone magazine came out with their list of top 100 guitarists they included Jack White in the top 20. At the time the list was released after Elephant, and at the time I was not fond of The White Stripes. Mainly because I like...d the album White Blood Cells and didn't think to much about it. I heard the first single from Elephant "Seven Nation Army" and I felt at the time that it was a let down. My brother on the other hand loved it and bought the album. For months he would talk about how amazingly great the album was. I got sick of him talking about it and did my best to avoid the album. My bad. So over the winter sitting in my college dorm I was watching The Grammy's and Jack White appeared. Holy crap could he mess around with that guitar. The chords and notes he seemed to be distorting on his own without a peddal or anything. I was amazed and sided with Rolling Stone magazine with their choice after months of complaining about it. A week goes by and I watch the video for their second single "The Hardest Button to Button" and was amazed by it. Not by the video but the song. It was great the guitars and the thumping bass drum, I thought I was in heaven. This in mind I felt maybe I should listen to the album (by this time they had released their top 500 albums list with this on it). So I borrowed the album from my brother and let it sit in my CD case for a few week. On a three hour ride from school I was looking for something to listen to. I found Elephant. The first song on the album was their first single which I remember not being to impressed with. I gave it a good listen though and realized why it was so good. The writing is tight, the steady drum beat wtih a solid guitar/bass line and Jack soft and calm vocals. After sitting through that song I and my opinion drastically changing of it I listened to the rest of the album. I was shocked. The album urprised the hell out of me. It was almost like going to a church revival meeting except here the church is Rock 'N' Roll and the pastor is Jack White. This opinion is very much solidified by the operatic goshel like opening to what just so happens to be my favorite song on the album "There's No Home For You Here Go Away". The gosphel like opening announces the opening of the church of Rock revival. The harsh guitar chords on the song and shy yet strong drum beats are the music for the gosphel choir. To me this song is where Jack proves a true technician of his guitarist. The solo is so distorted and the difference between this distortion is that it is naturally not artificially made. Later on the album they take a stab at blues yet unlike a conventional blues song this one is 7min 19sec long! Also Meg takes the mic on the song "In the Cold, Cold Night" and I don't understand why she didn't take it sooner. Her voice is soft and gentle but at the same time it demands to be listened to. Nicely overlayed over the guitar (which sound strangely fragile and that's a good thing in this instance) and with little percussion. In short ladies and gentlemen buy this album. It's worth the 10-15 bucks your bound to shell out for it. Read more Less
