    So Complex... Yet So Simple!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 6, 2001

The concept here is about the earth and the effect of its importance to these five musicians. A very intelligent effort, but most of all an expression of themselves in an even more authentic way:changing sound & style again! Don't forget Shaeffer's n...umber 1 thanx to marijuana when you hear this album!!! Read more Less

    Still very good!

By 1993, Atheist basically decided to disband but when frontman Kelly Shaeffer found out that Atheist was still under contractual obligation to do another album he regrouped and headed back to the studio. He was immediately confronted by two major pr...oblems: 1) guitarist Rand Burkey and drummer Steve Flynn had left the band and 2) he had only 40 days to write, rehearse and record the album!! Luckily, Rand rejoined the group in time for the recording and after a hasty and no doubt stressful time in the recording studio Atheist managed to pull through! The result was Elements, a good album, but lacking much of the fire and intensity that put this band right at the top of the death metal genere with bands like Death and Cynic. Firstly, the album is not death metal and strays far from this bands previous material. One song is a latin influenced instrumental that is almost dancible! Secondly, the loss of the phenomenal Steve Flynn was telling and the studio drummer that fills in is adequate at best. However, despite all of the shortcomings and the difficulties in making this album it actually came out very well and has seen many a play on my disc player. A well done swan song by one of the finest bands ever assembled, but the newcomer to Atheist would do themselves much better by starting out with the two earlier releases unless, of course, they are into a little Samba Briza. It's still Atheist, but.....

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 1, 1999

Elements is a great album. Green, Air, Mineral and Elements in particular really get the blood pumping. However, with the loss of Steve Flynn, I think that Shaefer must have been at a loss on how to proceed in the same direction they were headed wit...h Unquestionable Presence. With the move to creating tracks in standard song form, Atheist seems to have lost it's previous edge, to me at least. However, I also think that it may have been due to the fact they switched labels, and lost Scott Burns as producer. However, if nothing else, you have to get this album for Samba Briza alone; it's quite possibly the best track on the whole album, not just for the sheer shock value of putting something like that on a death metal album, but because it's one hell of a good song! All in all, a pleasing end to Atheist's musical career. Read more Less
