    So Complex... Yet So Simple!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 6, 2001

The concept here is about the earth and the effect of its importance to these five musicians. A very intelligent effort, but most of all an expression of themselves in an even more authentic way:changing sound & style again! Don't forget Shaeffer's n...umber 1 thanx to marijuana when you hear this album!!! Read more Less

    Still very good!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 18, 2001

By 1993, Atheist basically decided to disband but when frontman Kelly Shaeffer found out that Atheist was still under contractual obligation to do another album he regrouped and headed back to the studio. He was immediately confronted by two major pr...oblems: 1) guitarist Rand Burkey and drummer Steve Flynn had left the band and 2) he had only 40 days to write, rehearse and record the album!! Luckily, Rand rejoined the group in time for the recording and after a hasty and no doubt stressful time in the recording studio Atheist managed to pull through! The result was Elements, a good album, but lacking much of the fire and intensity that put this band right at the top of the death metal genere with bands like Death and Cynic. Firstly, the album is not death metal and strays far from this bands previous material. One song is a latin influenced instrumental that is almost dancible! Secondly, the loss of the phenomenal Steve Flynn was telling and the studio drummer that fills in is adequate at best. However, despite all of the shortcomings and the difficulties in making this album it actually came out very well and has seen many a play on my disc player. A well done swan song by one of the finest bands ever assembled, but the newcomer to Atheist would do themselves much better by starting out with the two earlier releases unless, of course, they are into a little Samba Briza. Pro Reviews: Elements

  • All Music Guide

Easily the most accessible of Atheist's three albums, 1993's Elements was recorded under duress from the band's record company, which forced them back into the studio after their initial breakup in order to fulfill their contractual obligations. But remarkably, the group rose to the challenge, delivering another highly accomplished set which illustrated both a natural evolution of their sound and served as a worthy final chapter to their all-too-brief and very troubled trajectory. Shedding most of the harsh dynamics of efforts past, Elements was the first Atheist LP to welcome melody with open arms, resulting in a far more immediate and organic listening experience throughout. Conceptually linked by lyrics focusing on the various elements (see title), songs like "Air," "Mineral," and "Fire" remain admirably true to the band's famously complicated arrangements, syncopated rhythms, and ultra-precise attack, but also boast a cleaner musicality never before attempted by the group. The only... challenge to the album's creative continuity then becomes the short instrumental mood pieces ("Samba Briza," "Fractal Point," etc.) interspersed between the actual songs, these proving a tad too off-kilter and oblique even for Atheist to pull off convincingly. Yet with the final, old-school aggression of the excellent title track, the band offers a fitting, all-inclusive swan song summarizing their entire musical odyssey. - Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Atheist

Arguably the ultimate progressive metal band of their day, Atheist's impossibly Byzantine death-jazz proved too advanced even for committed metal heads to stomach. Over the span of three albums admirably recorded in spite of crippling adversity, the band's inventive but inaccessible style has earned them a lasting respect, but likewise compromised their chances of attai... Read more
