3rd of the 3 power albums by Jimi

Pros: Expands his already phenomenal musical prowess

Cons: Lyrics are typical Jimi, slightly unprofound

By 1968 when Jimi unleashed this double record, The Expreience had already pushed boudaries (and expanded minds) with two outstanding albums. This only pushes the envelope further with Jimi's self-proclaimed favorite song "Burning of the Mid...night Lamp," "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)," and "Moon, Turn the Tides..." setting new standards in experimental music. Jimi sticks with the basics in "Crosstown Traffic," and "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" and introduces a whole new audience to Delta Blues (or "Electric Church" as described by Jimi) with "Voodoo Chile." Perhaps the most notable song on the record is "All Along the Watchtower," easily considered the best cover song of all time. This album is essential to any lover of music. Read more Less

of the best albums of all time. The Experience's 3rd and final studio album, the double LP Electric Ladyland showcased the talent of Jimi and his Experience. Every song is good, and it is more of a concept album than Sgt. Pepper's or Are Yo...u Experienced?. It should be in every collection, no matter what you listen to. And if you are still not convinced, 75+ minutes of music for the price of one album! It's not a best of album either! So, go get Hendrix's best work! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Electric Ladyland

  • All Music Guide

With Electric Ladyland, Hendrix took psychedelic experimentation as far as he could within the original Experience trio format. That meant pushing the barriers of late-'60s studio technology as far as they could bend, particularly with regard to multi-tracking and effects that could only be achieved through certain treatments and manipulation of the tape itself. It also meant greater freedom and looseness in the playing and the songwriting, which could be both a plus and a drawback, as the compositions became both less constricted and less concise. Not all of the material here is top-of-the-line, but certainly much of this is Hendrix at his best: the dreamy wah-wah guitars of "Rainy Day, Dream Away" were only matched by the dreaminess of the lyrics, and "Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)" and "Gypsy Eyes" were also standouts. "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)" and "Voodoo Chile" were lengthy cuts dominated by jam-like instrumental passages; "Crosstown Traffic" and a cover ...of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," by contrast, were two of his catchiest and most pop-friendly tunes. "Voodoo Chile," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and a cover of Earl King's "Come On" are three of his most determined forays into the blues, albeit the blues as fed through a nearly avant-garde filter. Originally released as a double album, the CD reissue fits the entire recording onto one 75-minute disc. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less

Jimi Hendrix

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His frequent hurricane blasts of ... Read more
