Eldar Djangirov was born in Kyrgyzstan, but after jazz aficionado Charles McWhorter saw the nineyearold playing at the Russian Novosibirsk Jazz Festival in 1996, he arranged to bring the family to the U.S. so that the Djangirov could study there, and in 1998 they settled in Kansas City, chosen due to its rich musical heritage.
