Eggplant
Southern California's Eggplant wove sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholy, but generally laid-back songs around the guitar minimalism of the Velvet Underground and, especially, Jonathan Richman. Guitarists/vocalists Jon Melkerson and Jeff Beals wrote the bulk of the group's material and were supported by bassist John Kelly and drummer Dave Tabone. Eggplant debuted in 1989 with Monkeybars; it was followed a year later by the more highly produced Sad Astrology.
