Pro Reviews: Ecce Homo

  • All Music Guide

Grant Hart released this live acoustic record at the height of the "unplugged" craze. While this move could be seen as jumping on the proverbial bandwagon, Ecce Homo was actually supposed to be a concert recording of his group Nova Mob, but the band broke up shortly before the performance date. Besides, Hart's undeniable sense of melody, combined with the intensity and singalong nature of his songs, fits perfectly in the "campfire" setting. (The album was taped in front of a small, appreciative audience.) The CD highlights Hart's entire career to date: from overlooked contributions to Hüsker Dü's legacy, to his work with Nova Mob, to solo gems (including the oft-covered "2541"). The sound quality is a tad on the lo-fi side, but Ecce Homo is still a rewarding purchase for both longtime and new fans of this largely neglected figure.
