One Of The Great Blues LP's Of The '60's

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 20, 2006

Pros: Brilliant musicians at their peak

    Cons: Ends too quickly

One of the great blues albums of the mid-60's. The Butterfield Blues Band was fresh off of backing Dylan at Newport in 1965. Legendary guitarists, Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop along with Billy Davenport on drums (who had replaced an ailing Sa...m Lay), Jerome Arnold (bass), Mark Naftalan (keybords) and the man himself, Paul Butterfield. From "Walkin' Blues" to the raga-insane-brilliant-jam "East West", this album moves and rocks. No record collection should be without "East/ West". Do yourself a favor and buy this album. Great but could have used more harp.

Not as much Butterfield on this one. Too many guitars. Check out Butterfield's solo in "Work Song". Killer.

The second Butterfield album had an even greater effect on music history, paving the way for experimentation that is still being explored today. This came in the form of an extended blues-rock solo (some 13 minutes) -- a real fusion of jazz and blues inspired by the Indian raga. This ground-breaking instrumental was the first of its kind and marks the root from which the acid rock tradition emerged.

Paul Butterfield

Paul Butterfield was the first white harmonica player to develop a style original and powerful enough to place him in the pantheon of true blues greats. It's impossible to underestimate the importance of the doors Butterfield opened: before he came to prominence, white American musicians treated the blues with cautious respect, afraid of coming off as inauthentic.
