The uniquely original platform shooter that raised a legion of fans on the Sega Genesis and Super NES finds its way to the portable power of Nintendo's Game Boy Advance with this release of Earthworm Jim. This GBA version is based directly on the 1994 console game, but offers special mini-games and other features designed just for the handheld release. Players take the role of Jim, an otherwise ordinary earthworm who has gained special powers from a mysterious, super-high-tech spacesuit.

In the spacesuit, Earthworm Jim can run, jump, climb, and fire the suit's built-in Plasma Blaster to make short work of vicious enemies. While wearing the suit, Jim also has the ability to use his own head as a whip, or as a spinning helicopter blade to allow soft landings from long drops. With power comes responsibility, however, so Earthworm Jim is honor-bound to a quest to save the beautiful Princess-What's-Her-Name while avoiding the treachery of the foul bounty hunter Psy-Crow and his evil (and disgusting) employer, Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-Filled, Malformed, Slug-for-a-Butt. ~ T.J. This is a traditional platform-style game with fun graphics and audio. The levels are visually interesting and well varied. Two particular problems are evident in this game. Firstly, the graphics in almost all the levels are very dark. If you own... a GBA, you should buy an accessory worm light or "lightboy" type product. You'll find it especially hard to play this game without one. Secondly, I found player control to be lacking. You cannot walk (or run!) and use weapons at the same time, which puts you at a decided disadvantage over your quick-moving-simultaneous
ly-shooting enemys. Turning around takes extra time, too. Overall, I liked the game design and concept, but I felt that developers could have done more to make the game play well. One final remark: Gameboy Advance does not have a memory or storage capability of any kind. Turn off your gameboy, and you get to start Earthworm Jim from the very beginning!
