Pro Reviews: Early Recordings, Vol. 2

  • All Music Guide

The second of two LPs documenting the earliest recordings of the legendary New Orleans clarinetist Emile Barnes contains six alternate takes from his 1951 sextet session with trumpeter Lawrence Toca and trombonist Harrison Brazlee heard in Volume 1 plus six selections from the following year that feature a quintet with Barnes and trumpeter Charlie Love. Even with some erratic moments from the band, these two sets are recommended to New Orleans jazz fans; Barnes in particular is in good form.
