Somewhat eccentric from DD today, this album had many hits. "Girls On Film", "Planet Earth", "Careless Memories", "Is There Something I Should Know."

Of course very few realised that New Romantic movement won't last any longer than the first hit (album or single) and pulled down numerous names disintegrating with it. Duran Duran were a classic example of how can a music industry make you stars and then... 'Duran Duran' is an excellent album. From very first camera intros of 'Girls on Film' through to an astonishing instrumental of 'Tel Aviv' the album is an excellent sequence of exotic and hedonistic statements, equally charging drums, guitars, basses, vocals and synthesizer ambients on top. Artistically they never came with anything like it again. This album's CD release saw another stupidity in the DD/EMI camp - a decision to include one of the group's later singles, 'Is there something I should know' (from 1983), into a concept where it doesn't fit at all. But why not, let's fill in the space anyway we can. A brilliant 'To the Shore' was almost pushed out for good. It's not even typefaced with the same letters as the rest of the song titles on the CD-rear. Not to forget stylish Assorted IMaGes' design being cropped and silver just vanished.

If you were a child of the new romantic times you will love this album. But then you probably already have it in your tape collection.

Duran Duran's first album reveals their synth punk heritage. LeBon's lyrics were still semi-meaningful and the rest actually seemed to be having fun. The whole thing brings back great memories.
