Pros: okay dokey
Cons: okay dokey
I rented this film because I was a total fan of Jeremy Irons, and don't get me wrong, I still am, but I don't think this was one of his best. Though Irons executed the role pretty well, I think the story plot was a bit out of place, and the graphics weren't all that great either. I personally don't think that such a great actor should be wasting his precious time doing films like that. But perhaps that's just me. So overall I would give this film three stars out of five and grade it at a big fat C. (Sorry Jeremy. It just really wasn't all that great.) If you wanna see Jeremy really in action and at his best you should instead go rent 'Die Hard With a Vengeance', 'Reversal of Fortune', or 'Stealing Beauty'.
This DVD is loaded with goodies. Commentary, deleted scenes, and all you ever wanted to know about the actual game including some footage of Gary Gygax. Unfortunately, the movie itself is less than spectacular and even D&D fans won't find much to enjoy in it. The special effects are spectacular. The characters are somewhat interesting, but if you truly wanted to represent D&D it seems as though there should have been someone from every class from the original game. Marlan Wayans as "Snails" is the only thing that keeps this movie interesting. Jeremy Irons seems completely out of place in this movie as the over the top Profion. Maybe its the fact that his hair is too perfect. The main flaw in the movie is the story itself. This feels like it was written by someone who didn't know much about adventure, fantasy or D&D. Of all the great concepts, worlds, adventures and heros that have been created for the game, you think they had at least could have found something good to use. The whole idea of a divided mage aristocracy deciding how power should be handled among the masses isn't the greatest way to kick of this series. I found that to be a little too much in a movie that was not very serious. There are too many scenes with bumbling guards running into a bar and tripping over themselves. No one gets stabbed or cleaved or run through or anything. With a movie that has so many weapons there are bearly any interesting fight scenes. This movie seems over produced and under budgeted. They can't seem to make up their minds whether this should be a Xena wanna be episode or a serious fantasy film. There appears to be a lot of effert put into this film. And that is the most frustrating part because of what this film could have been.
They picked a great cast! Made the movie more enjoyable knowing Justin Whalin was in it ^^; Overall, the movie was all together funny, dramatic, exciting. I'm going out to buy the DVD soon!
As a science fiction and fantasy fan, I was looking forward to this movie. As a Jeremy Irons fan, I was really looking forward to this movie. What I got was crap.
Poorly written, poorly directed, and I'm sad to say, poorly acted, even by Jeremy. He's an Acadamy Award Winning actor that gave a performance which gave no crediblity to the character.
The only thing I liked about this move was the end credits!
May not be great story but still has great dragons, special FXs at least makes this film better than most dragon movies movies only the shot on "Reign of Fire" prove better.
<EOM>
Great special effects. One of the best dragons I have ever seen in a movie. They could have used a good cleric at the end.
Still cracking up. Those 2 thieves were sooooooooo much like the thieves I used to play...
All you jabronies who gave this crap movie above 1 star, The Rock says this: he's gonna take that remote control of yours. Then he'll take all the batteries out, lube it up, TURN THAT SONUVABITCH SIDEWAYS AND STICK IT STRAIGHT UP YOUR CANDY-ASSES!!!
This is a pretty good movie a good cast, and story idea.. but they didn quite go all the way. They couldve made it a little longer and added some more sideplots in their. The main plot is good and effects are great but they forgot they created a whole new world the entire movie revovless arouond the main chaerectors and that takes away from the reality factor... but overall it is well worth a rent.. abd if you're into medievil times worth a buy
Good cast. Great idea. Great effects. What happened with the execution?
. The story line has no flow to it and some characters seem a bit awkward at times. Looks like the effects
department got the bulk of the dough and the script writing team got paid in fools gold.
Not a good rental.
I loved this movie! At first I didn't want to rent it, but now I am glad I did!Great special effects, great cast, great movie!
This was a good movie, but not the best. I would wait until it's a little cheaper or rent it. The DVD is the better choice, because the cut vital parts of the movie from the VHS and the cinima versions. They are still cut from the feature on the DVD, but you can veiw them under special features. Hopefully the next movie will be better, if they plan on accually doing the next movie
I think this was a great movie and I recommend it to all action and fantasy viewers. It had good special effects and a very good plot.
Yes, this movie hurts! Hurts the wallet, hurts the intelligence, and the mood. This was a total waste of a movie concept. You get better entertainment value watching Xena : Warrior Princess.
What a bow-bow this movie was ! Wait for it to hit the ten dollar discount bin at Blockbuster. Terrible attempt at a fantasy flick, they should stick to just the game and forget trying to hype a lame movie from it.
Stooooopid, the special effects were cool but the rest stoooooooopid
Let me tell ya, Im a advid gamer, and I play a lot of Real time Strags dealing with the fantasy world, and this movie gives great detail on a lot of magical races, the writers did excellent research.
The CGI was amazing, the Dragon close ups where hot really hot, those guys made you beleive in Dragons.
The Plot was ok, I can tell they had to make the movie for everyone, not just us Fantasy RPG'ers, so they simplified alot of stuff for the non-gamers.
All-N-All my hats off to the folks for a job well done.
I usually don't write reviews either, but on this movie I will. If you take it at face value, you will be disappointed. However, I generally accepted the fact that as a time passer it was a good movie. It could have been a lot worse. Some past sword and scorcery movies really lacked the effort and plot. In D&D this was not the case. I saw real effort to make this movie entertaining while sticking to the premise of the RPG.
Which by the way I used to play. I am looking forward to this movie to come out on DVD. I will get it.
It was great. It had great special effects. The plot was good, and everything else in it. Whoever wrote a bad review on it has problems cause it was cool. The only bad part was the weak maze that Ridley had to go through. Otherwise, it deserves 5 BIG STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was once the Dungons Master in a game party that consisted of predominately adolescent boys. I shook my head in disbelief as I witnessed fantasy medieval characters use 20th century slang shamelessly and foolish gameplay that defied normal logic. One player even had the audacity to argue that his character was born in the "medieval ghetto"....hence justifying the use of words like "brotha" and "cool" to express himself.
Watching this movie reminded me of those botched adventures.
In short, the movie was decorated nicely with adequate special effects, but was horribly amiss in the story department. Two thieves are the centerpiece of this adventure. One, named "Snails" (Marlon Wayons) makes his best imitation of the cowardly Jar-Jar Binks while jiving his way through the film.
Meanwhile, the ruler of the fantasy kingdom (Thora Birch) decides that the power of the nation should be evenly distributed to the peasants as well as nobility.....all the while an arch-wizard (Jeremy Irons) seeks to oust her by controlling the dragons of the realm.
The special effects are decent enough to make some forget the fact that this is a terrible movie. Pay closer attention, and you'll find that there is really little story....and even less acting holding the film up. Laden with cliches and having the thinnest of plot lines, "Dungeons and Dragons" has horribly devoid of the spirit and mystery of its famous namesake role-playing game.
There is no doubt that the movie was a hit to many of the diehard game players in the audience. To the general public, however, the movie badly fails its saving throw.
The dragon sequences and relates special effects are good. The plot, acting, attempts at drama and romance and general direction do not survive scrutiny outside that age bracket
I don't usually care to write reviews, much less
share a review online. But after watching "Dungeons and
Dragons" over the weekend, I felt compelled to. First of
all, the film is generally not bad, but it is missing
a lot of spark. There seemed to be a lot of jump
cuts and scenes that just didn't make sense. In terms
of costumes, the Empress Savina (Thira Birch) had a
lot of ornate costumes that you can tell she felt
uncomfortable in, thus not delivering some scenes to their full
potential. In one scene, she's wearing the gold gown with
the crazy horns sticking out behind her shoulders.
She had matching shoes for that dress and you can
tell she was not having some fun in those party
platform shoes. You could tell she was awkward and it
sorta made the character seem awkward, throwing off
whatever rhythm she could be in. And then there's the
magic, I saw too much magic coming from Jeremy Iron's
character and little or no magic coming from the Empress or
Marina (Zoe McLellan). Absolutely no balance.
In all,
I had to keep reminding myself that this was
directed by a first-time director, Courtney Solomon, and
it painfully showed. Will we see a sequel to this?
Maybe, but I wouldn't hold my breath, nor will I get
this on DVD.
