I just rented it okay, but I AM a die hard sci-fi maniac. My knowledge ranges from the Star Wars movies (my personal fav's), 2001 (and 2010), to the acclaimed Alien movies. I also look into the ones highly recommended - Blade Runner, Planet of the Ap...es (original and the awesome remake), even the Terminator movies. But since I am not familiar with David Lynch, and hearing a lot about this movie, I decided to give it a look. How I have made a wise choice. The plot gathered to me very gradually in a fashion you wouldnt expect. And seeing a remarkable cast - reknowned Patrick Stewart, Max Von Sydow, even Sting - gave me a sense of emotion. This emotion gave me the very feeling that this movie had character itself. And another thing I find noting, is the theme of the movie - as heard in the title credits! I must admit, when I first heard, it was absorbing and moving. Other things that made this movie a noted one was the inventive sound, the simple visual effects (which I think are original), and the pulse rupturing sound. Sci-fi fans all over, if you ever stumble upon this one, do give this one a chance. For it is much deserved, and this movie also deserves a spot on the classic sci-fi list. Read more Less

Dune - The Desert Planet DVD Review

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 18, 2006

Pros: The extended version gives more exposition about the world of Dune

Cons: New to Dune will get easily lost with Lynch's version

When Dune appeared on the big screen, I had no idea who or what was going on nor the history that is Dune. Not until Dune came on VHS and the Scifi Channel and reading the actual book did I come to appreciate the difficult nature it was to tell this ...story visually. The behind the scenes footage and deleted scenes are especially interesting for any fan of Dune. I rumor out there states that there is a 6 hour version of Dune. Where? Who knows. Next, the Harkonens protrayed are notoriously evil as only Lynch can. We can see shades of them as seen in later Lynch movies with villians like Frank Booth "Blue Velvet" or Bobby Peru "Wild at Heart". They are all sick, twisted and demented. Once you get past the extended version, look at the Scifi Channel's miniseries of Dune and Children of Dune. I believe there is only the extended version of Dune miniseries which is a little more violent and has nudity. I was more impressed by how the world of Dune was created on a soundstage. This was how Dune needed to be treated by none the less, we have what we have. All these films should help you to be able to read the ever expanding world of Dune. Read more Less

I have read the books, seen the new 2001 DUNE movie version, and seen this version. Even though in this movie version, the director may have changed things quite a bit, I loved the way all the actors fit together in this version. This movie seem to t...ake me to that place in the book along with the charactors Kyle Mclachen, Francesca Annis (Sexy mom)Patrick Steward (early role before Star Trek), Linda Hunt and even the bad guys left their mark Sting, Jose Ferrer, and the Harkonian Lord classic scene that he did not die by the gas of the poisoned tooth; great acting plus the score was classic. I enjoyed this movie very much and bought it on DVD. Read more Less

not a crammed and chopped up film. Even then it could not do justice to one of the all time greats of SF. A lot of potential thrown away by director/producer bickering, and McLachlan simply does not look nor act the part. Positive side include many b...eautiful effects, from the slobbering monstrous Guild Navigators, to the worms, to the hideous Baron Harkonnen. By the way the recent TV remake was much worse - the acting was wooden, the actors spent their time with their mouth open, spoke their lines while spitting at the camera, and gave every indication of drudgery, and too many liberties were taken with the novel. One small redeeming feature was the Princess Irulan, the only one with any acting ability in that sorry mess. I wish I knew her name to follow her carrer. Read more Less

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 13, 2001

Dune is perhaps one of the Best Sci-fi books ever written. Sadly this movie doesn't follow it's example. David Lynch changed every aspect of the orignal book to try to make it fit into three hours of movie. The acting is excellent, the plot is weak a...nd hard to follow. Even reading the book first, the average movie fan would have a hard time figuring out everything that is going on in this movie. Next time read the BOOK Lynch! Read more Less

    Amazing Movie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 9, 2001

This movie is spectacular, one of the instances where a movie is almost as good as the book. Amazing special effects, flawless casting...I appreciated it all the more after seeing the horrible 2000 remake.
