Synopsis: Dune (1984)

Synopis: David Lynch's baroque rendering of Frank Herbert's detailed, complex, and deliberately paced epic science-fiction novel is a muddled but visually stunning affair. It's 10191, and the desert planet Dune has been taken over by the Harkonnens, oppressive conquerors who desire the precious spice that lies beneath Dune's arid sands. The story concerns the attempts of a young warrior messiah, Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), to lead the native inhabitants in an uprising against the evil empire--and battle the giant man-eating worms that guard the coveted spice. Lynch shot much more footage than ended up in the finished film, but executive producer Dino De Laurentis didn't want a three-hour-plus sci-fi epic on his hands, so he coerced Lynch into trimming it. The result is one of cinema's most infamous cases of personal vision colliding with studio politics. Nonetheless, Lynch still manages to cram in so many visual ideas and captures the tone of the book so well that these production issues can be easily set aside once the story starts rolling. Refusing to further edit the film for television, Lynch took his name off the director and screenwriter credits. As troubling as DUNE might have been for Lynch, the experience greatly inspired 1986's brilliant BLUE VELVET, for which audiences should be thankful.

   Pros: The extended version gives more exposition about the world of Dune

   Cons: New to Dune will get easily lost with Lynch's version

   When Dune appeared on the big screen, I had no idea who or what was going on nor the history that is Dune. Not until Dune came on VHS and the Scifi Channel and reading the actual book did I come to appreciate the difficult nature it was to tell this story visually. The behind the scenes footage and deleted scenes are especially interesting for any fan of Dune. I rumor out there states that there is a 6 hour version of Dune. Where? Who knows.
   Next, the Harkonens protrayed are notoriously evil as only Lynch can. We can see shades of them as seen in later Lynch movies with villians like Frank Booth "Blue Velvet" or Bobby Peru "Wild at Heart". They are all sick, twisted and demented.
   Once you get past the extended version, look at the Scifi Channel's miniseries of Dune and Children of Dune. I believe there is only the extended version of Dune miniseries which is a little more violent and has nudity. I was more impressed by how the world of Dune was created on a soundstage. This was how Dune needed to be treated by none the less, we have what we have.
   All these films should help you to be able to read the ever expanding world of Dune. ...
