Toad The Wet Sprocket -- Dulcinea

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 21, 2002

Dulcinea must be one of the most successful albums by Toad The Wet Sprocket. In their music the guys of Toad The Wet Sprocket have contradicted many people's statements that rock is substance with no depth. In this album their songs express emotions ...such as anger, happiness, contempt, and sorrow. This album is true genius. Each song expresses an emotion which I think many people can relate to. In the fifth track "Crowing" he talks to somebody about how she was going to lose her love no matter what. As he said in the song "You'd give him love and affection but you couldn't keep him there." The ninth track, "Fall Down," is probably one of Toad's most recognizable songs. It speaks of somebody's frustrations with society and everyday life. As is said in the refrain "Jump back, got to get out of here, been here too long this time now...When will we fall down?" Read more Less

    Great Album

I really liked this album. It's not quite as good as Fear, but it's still better than most bands can do. The only bad song is "Reincarnation Song". It sucks hard core. Every other song is great though.

From the platform of success built by Fear, Toad the Wet Sprocket dove head first into their fourth release, Dulcinea. Without changing the formula too much, they conjured up 12 more hooks, stretching them ever so slightly to make the alternative tunes a bit edgier and the mellow ones a little folkier, and scoring a couple of modest hits along the way with "Something's Always Wrong" and "Fall Down." One of the thematic threads of Toad's music has always been a certain spirituality, a sense of awe and wonder in regard to life and death. Dulcinea exploits and explores that theme with reverence and humility, going so far as to close the album with "Reincarnation Song," a delicate examination of a soul's transition shrouded musically by a veil of electric guitar feedback. Counteracting that heaviness with an offbeat, country-tinged ditty about the pros of Nanci Griffith versus Loretta Lynn is pure Toad, never being pinned into a stylistic corner. One of the best songs on this album, and pe...rhaps their entire catalog, is "Windmills," a moody look at the fragility and futility of existence that will cause not only the exquisite melody to linger with you, but contemplations of your own purpose in life. Framed by the flawless production of Gavin MacKillop, every song on this record creates a world of its own that is impossible not to be drawn into. - Kelly McCartney, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Toad the Wet Sprocket

So named in honor of a sketch by the Monty Python comedy troupe, Toad the Wet Sprocket's mellow, melodic folk-pop sound made them one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the early 1990s. Singer Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning (the nephew of '50s hitmaker Mark "Teen Angel" Dinning) and drummer Randy Guss formed the group in 1986 i... Read more
